Balkan Church - Mothers and suns - Battle venus_afflicted July 18 2006, 19:37:02 UTC
Picking the book up feels like pulling an object from tar, and when it is freed, the room seems to shift and swirl around them. There is no sound, no light, but somehow everything seems loud and disorienting. Eventually the chaos builds to a frenzy and the walls ceiling and floor themselves begin to change. Long, wooden arms, patterned with wiry sinew and pulsing veins reach out to swipe and strike at you and your team members. These arms can be cut away, but more will always be produced. This "monster" will be more difficult to battle than any of the others encountered thus far.

Every so often, a bubbling sound preceeds a shrieking face appearing on a wall, floor, or ceiling amidst the arms. This is only visible for a short time, and then it sinks back into the surface it came from.

Warren would have to be the one to move the book.

Leon pulled back near the others as the walls started to change, but now they all didn't have much room to maneuver. "Stay close!"

One of the arms reached out and grabbed him, but his knife was able to slash into it, then kicked a chunk off. That didn't do much good as another arm quickly replaced that one. And when that arm would get cut up, two more would pop up in it's place.

"God damn this shit... it never ends!"

He had noticed the shrieking face, but it would appear and disappear at random. No real pattern to it that he could figure out yet. But... "...why does this seem so familiar?" He didn't have much time to think on it, he was busy ducking another swipe at himself.

"Oh crap..."
It's all Hellboy has time to get out as the room changes and the arms begin to swipe at them. Holstering his gun, the demon begins smashing at the hands and arms with his stone fist. Pieces snap, crumble, and break away, but it does no good. They seem to come back unaffected.

"What the heck do ya gotta do to this place?!"
He swings to pummel another hand, but is swatted across the small room to smash through pews and crash into a wall.
"Ok...that is no way to behave in a church."

Hellboy picks himself up and charges at one of the hands, crushing it with a few blows. Another springs quickly in its place.
"Oh come on!!"

And Warren is thoroughly and completely screwed. He has a bullet hole in one shoulder, melted metal in his hand, the damn book tucked under his arm and a scalpel. What? Central casting forgot his high heels and faulty flashlight?

But he tried, slashing at anything not... friendly, that comes at him as best he can. Flames lick at his one arm, the fire seeming to bring him calm where nothing else did. It barely does anything, more seeming to infuriate than stop. And the noise just seems to burrow into his head, eating at his ear drums until it seems it's all he can hear. The shrieking and the yells of his teammates.

He was having a hard time keeping track of everyone and everything, with all the arms waving around. He did catch a glimpse of Warren starting to burn up, while holding the book, which may be a potential key in solving this problem.

"Warren! Give Kate the book and cov--!" His shout was short lived as he got hit by another arm, this one from behind. He was dropped to his knees, and ended up face to face with that shrieking face as it appeared in the floor. Leon ignored it at first, opting to kick the arm that was taking another swing at him, then largely out of pure spite, he fired two 9mm shots at the face in the floor just as it was disappearing.

"Will you shut up!It was then that why this seemed so familiar clicked into place. "Salazar...", or more accurately, the final battle with him, with the constant vine whips and the the mutated 'Left Hand', and the constant noise, though instead of shrieking it was a stream of insults. More importantly, Salazar kept hiding, and the only time Leon could do any real damage was when he showed ( ... )

The face? Hellboy punches and tears his way through more of the arms; getting tired of watching them respawn and keeping an eye out for that screaming face. When it does appear on a wall, he lunges at it and punches it with his mammoth, indestructible right hand as many times as he can before it sinks away again.
"Get back here! I'm not done wi..."

A hand grabs him by the leg and drags him across the broken boards and mess of the church floor.
"Le' go!"
Hellboy pulls the Samaritan free and shoots the offending hand to be free from its grip.

He barely hears Leon, so busy trying to just stay on his feet and out of range. And not drop that damn scalpel. Twirling, shoving the book to Kate with a growl as he turns. Letting go, not struggling to hold back as the flames lapped up to his shoulders. It felt hot on his face, something he had never felt before but not burning even though he could feel it burning through the wound, cauterizing it.

Fighting as best he can, slashing and burning at anything that reached for him, and by default, for Katie. Warren just kept himself between those hands and her, with the book, as best he could.

Leon grabbed a piece of a broken pew, and used that to fight off some of the hands. The shrieking happened again, from above, and Leon fired off three shots from his .45. The first two hit, but the third veered wide right, his aim knocked off course when one of the arms hit him.

He got hit again, dropping his gun, but managed to clear out the arms near him and retrieve it. However, by then, the face retreated into the wall.

With his revolver gripped in his left hand and his right hand serving as a weapon of its own, Hellboy lays waste to dozens of swiping, striking arms. Some great good it does him, but at least it feels good to do. When the face appears above them he lets Leon fire on it, knowing his own bullets are very limited and he's likely to miss anyway.

However, when the face soon moves to rise from the floor, Hellbot throws himself on it, punching it mercilessly. Finally, he fires a couple of rounds into the thing just before it disappears again.
"Geez, what's with this place? Does ev'rything gotta have a trick answer?!"

Warren doesn't want to answer Hellboy. Come on, he knows he shouldn't but with a straight line like that. "Yes, it does. It's a rule."

Yelling it out and yet trying to sound casual about it as he slashes and stabs at anything that comes near him and Kate.

"Now figure out the damn trick before I burn out,' he snarls, face cast in bright light.

And Leon can't help but that that if he had a rocket launcher on him, they'd be finished with this thing by now.

Warren wasn't the only one who needed to worry about energy. Even Leon was getting winded, moving about as much as he was. The face finally appeared again, on a wall near him this time. He fired off the remaining six bullets in the clip in his .45, all six hitting their mark.

The face finally began to crack, but as Leon reloaded, it disappeared into the wall.

Hb may not be as quick to get tired, but he sure as hell isn't happy about this situation. He fights off as many arms as he can, takin a few, rough hits until, finally, the face appears on a nearby wall.

He tears his way free of the hands and arms and begins firing on the screaming head. When all five bullets are spent into the thing, he moves in close and begins slamming at the cracking visage with his stone fist.
"Shut it! None of us are havin' a good day!"
The cracks spread and there's a sound like the scream itself is shattering before it goes quiet, breaks and disappears. The arms stop moving, some snap and some recede back into walls and floors.

"'Bout time... geez... Everybody ok?"
He rubs at a bruised and battered shoulder and has a look around at everyone.

It was like a switch. The moment the sound dies, that he hears Hellboy's voice, the flames snap off. And Warren very nearly goes down with it. Between the pain, the trauma and the damage, keeping up that fire for that long had left him feeling literally drained.

"I'm alive,' he mutters, tasting fire even in his mouth, like he'd charred shit in there and that was when it hit him that he was likely dehydrated.

Tired, shoulders slumped, he looked around and saw the altar slip into the floor, sees the door revealed. "If this puts up back in the hospital, I swear I'm going to kill something,' he mutters, pushing it open.

This room contains another altar, but it isn’t nearly as benign as the one previous. The surface of the altar itself is splattered in red and thick, black sludge. An overturned goblet drips what appears to be spilled blood. Just beyond the altar looms a hole, about four feet in diameter and ringed with symbols written in red. Its darkness is endless, and the bottom can not be seen.

Leon just leans against a pew as things finally return to normal. "God damn this place..." And he though Salazar's castle has some messed up traps in it.

He takes a few breaths, taking a moment to look over himself. A few cuts, several bruises, his ribs got a bit banged, but nothing broke. Mostly, he's just out of breath. "I'm fine."

He follows through the door, and looks at the hole and the alter. This was largely out of his realm of expertise.

"What now? We try the incantation?"

Hellboy's feet drag a little; hooves cutting grooves in the wood floor as he enters the new room right behind Leon.
"If we use the book and it works we're still leavin' a lot of team members behind. Who knows if we can use it again t'come back and get 'em?"

He walks over to the edge of the hole and stares down in to the deep, black nothing. He kicks a bit of debris in and never hears it land.
"I think this's our exit, kids. Just as safe and invitin as everything else around here."

Kate has the book open already. Yes, she managed to find and keep the page.

"We might not get another chance to make it out," she says. "I don't mean to sound grim, but it's not like we can do this without Walter knowing."

She glances at Hellboy.

"We're probably going to need you to get out, Hellboy. So it's up to you."
