The Milk Brother and his Bliss Partner caught Al Gore's "
An Inconvenient Truth" last night. It was sobering, to say the least. At this point, it has to be acknowledged that the scientific basis for global warming is incontrovertable. Human activity is quickly warming the planet, causing both foreseen and unforeseen changes to the climate.
The good news is that it is well within human society's scientific and technological capabilities to arrest and reduce our output of greenhouse gasses. We may not be able to avert the damage already caused, but it is still possible to limit and mitigate future harm.
The bad news is that it will require political will to make the needed changes, and America, by far the biggest producer of greenhouse gasses, will need to take the lead. Yet, neither American politicians nor American citizens have shown much propensity for self-awareness or willingness to change in recent times.
The thought that our collective future depends on, say, the people in my apartment building "getting it" doesn't exactly instill loads of confidence.
P.S. Where was the Gore in the movie in 2000? Movie Gore was loose, funny, intelligent, articulate, and quite charismatic. Movie Gore would have kicked Dubbya's sorry ass up one side and down the other. If only...
