The past week was one heck of a ride. Last Saturday I was on duty. During our duty rounds, a patient began crashing. She turned out to be fave consultant's patient and a case of post cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration with choledochoscopy. I updated fave consultant and what came next during the entire fiasco were me being assigned to obtain a unit of packed RBC from the blood bank, and a series of vulgarities directed at me out of his agitation. It was the first time I'd seen him like that, and damn, I realized how painful it was to be cursed at by your favorite consultant and mentor. He was pretty much like a fire-breathing dragon, burning everything that passed him. Anyway, after taking a while trying to convince the blood bank to dispense the blood needed, and after favorite consultant went all dragon mode on them, they finally gave the blood. The patient was saved. A few days later, me and fave consultant did rounds on the patient. He told her that I was the "real hero" since I called him and alarmed him about her status. I felt giddy.
After a few more days, me and another resident were suddenly sunmoned to the medical education office, now headed by the personification of a vulture. The blood bank sent an incident report against us, especially me, because they felt "powerless and verbally harassed". For two hours, I had to explain my side of the story while the vulture made me feel like an idiot every statement I made. Long story short, I got my first incident report for the year and it's a more serious one since it involved more than one department. However, it wasn't just me and my other co-resident involved. Favorite consultant was listed in the IR, and I showed it to him. He decided to answer it as well since he knew it wasn't our fault but actually his (he was cursing everybody on that day of the emergency). I don't know any other consultant who would step up like that and give himself to protect his residents. I must admit I was touched, and all the more I feel I can trust him 100%.
His IR was given just a few days ago, and now we're still waiting for what would happen. It was also his birthday on the 20th. I already started looking for a belated birthday gift for him while he's currently in the US for a surgery convention. He's done a lot for me since last year; always helping me think positive, reassuring me, helping me with my researches. I can't thank him enough. That's why I ended up buying him a belated birthday gift with a little help from his wife on what he might like. I hope he likes it though.
