The simple task of this job is to watch people, and observe. Take note of normal human behaviour, picking up bits and pieces of conversation as you walk past them, soak in the various expressions from faces looking at you. Occasionally you do double up as a walking information counter, which really peeves me since there are counters prominently situated around, and its not really in my job scope to tend to such requests. I still answer them though to uphold Singapore's image of being polite and helpful.
Some memorable moments though:
- "where can I get a pre-paid taxi around here?" Still early in the morning, my mind isn't working as I could only mutter "I don't know"
- Some girl just ran in front of me directly on my prowling route while her mom got ready the camera. Tried to move away (we're not supposed to let the public take photos of us), but could only walk, so I reckon half of my body is in that photo.
- A Caucasian grandmother told her granddaughter when they walked in front of me this: "ah, a soldier. you like soldiers, don't you"
- Some mom just told her son: "You better be good eh. If not the police will catch you. You see their guns?" This really brought me back to my childhood years.
Some of these incidents really made me want to give a giggle or a smile, but obviously I can't due to operational reasons. So imagine how difficult it was for me to really hold back that smile and keep that straight face there.
