Who: Ed and Al What: Getting the stones! Where: Underground city When: Er. Near future. WE'RE AHEAD OF OURSELVES. Why: We're bored and want to do Ed and Al stuff.
Edward still could barely believe that his little brother had his body back and could now grow up normally, like he always should have been able to do. It grated a little on his guilt knowing that he hadn't been able to do it for Alphonse, but as long as it had been done, he was happy as anything. Happier than he'd been for a long time, in fact. "You're sure that everything's . . . working right, right?" he asked for about the thousandth time since he'd first seen his brother's real body.
"Yes, brother, I'm sure! Stop worrying so much," he answered, laughing a little, for the thousandth time as well. Edward probably wouldn't stop asking him questions like that until years later. "Everything's working fine, and I'm happy." He really was happy. Now they would just have to concentrate on getting Ed's limbs back. He smiled honestly at Edward, before adding softly, "Thank you."
Edward smiled a little sadly but quickly wiped it away because, dammit, there was nothing to be sad about! His brother had his life back and everything could be normal! Well, as normal as their lives were going to get, which was fine by Edward. "I dunno what you're thanking me for," he said, turning to watch his footing as they descended the stairs to the underground city. "It's not like I did anything."
Alphonse almost stopped short. Hadn't done anything? Clearly, Edward was crazy. It was true that, no, in the end, Edward hadn't been the one to give him his body back. But he'd been there and he had tried, risking everything, to get it back. And that somehow counted more than being human again. "Not like you did anything? You're delusional! Who spent the last few years risking his life to get our bodies back? That counts, you know. Counts for a lot. I've got a lot to thank you for."
"Like putting you in that armor in the first place?" Edward retorted with a somewhat bitter smirk. "Nah, you did this all on your own, no thanks to me." He turned to smile at his little brother and wrapped his arm around Alphonse's shoulders. "I'm just glad you got your body back, okay? Even if I had nothing to do with it, I don't care."
Alphonse frowns and speaks with a half smile. "Hey, we did that together, alright? I don't understand why you think it's only your fault, brother." He grins as Ed wraps his arm around his shoulders. He hadn't thought he'd be able to touch him until years. He chuckled to himself, noticing he was slightly taller than Edward. "You did have something to do with it, though! If you hadn't been there in the first place, I wouldn't even had the armor." He paused, before saying in that tone, "Say, aren't I a tiny bit taller than you?"
Sometimes, Alphonse just made his older brother want to hug him, but since he had a reputation to uphold (and he'd done plenty of that when he'd first seen the younger boy back in his old body), he resisted. Besides, it wasn't that hard to resist hugging someone that had just insulted you. "WHO'RE YOU CALLING SO SHORT HE HAS TO-" Edward was cut off when he realized that there wasn't much room for all of his flailing on the staircase and suddenly there was nothing solid beneath his feet and he was falling backwards, his mouth open and his eyes wide as he watched Alphonse get further away.
"Brother!" Alphonse reached an arm out, trying to grab his brother's arm, or a piece of his cloak, whatever he could to keep him from falling, but only grabbed air. He gaped as Edward fell backwards and really hoped he wouldn't get hurt, despite knowing it takes more than a tumble down the stairs to wound an Elric.
How ironic it was that, after everything that Edward had lived through in his (short) life, the thing to kill him would be a fall that was the direct result of his temper about his height. But before he was even able to get a decent slideshow of his life going, he'd already fallen on the floor. It knocked the wind out of him more than it hurt (though that wasn't to say that it hadn't hurt), which meant that he hadn't died because dead people didn't have wind to get knocked out of them. Edward cracked his eyes open and saw the part of the stairs he'd fallen from where his brother was standing probably about seven feet above him. He groaned, got to his feet, rubbed his head, and called up to his would-be rescuer, "Al! We're here."
Alphonse tried very hard to hide his grin. That had been an advantage of being in armor - he never had to hide his facial expressions, just cover his voice. "Are - Are you okay?" he said, half laughing. He ran down the few steps Edward had fallen off of, and put a hand on his shoulder(lifting a small cloud of dust from his brother's cloak), grinning. "That'll teach you to flail in small, unsafe places!" He took a deep breath before facing the city, having seen what would, or would have, happened there. Didn't help that the place was rather creepy in the first place.
Was Alphonse laughing? Over the years, Edward had become an adept at reading his brother's voice since he rarely had anything else to work off of to guess at his feelings and he could tell, without so much as a doubt, that his little brother was laughing at him! He grumbled to himself and dusted his coat off as he went to stand by the younger boy, looking out over the underground city. "Still just as creepy as ever," he muttered, almost able to see the ghosts of the people that had been killed for the Stone. "Well, may as well get this over with."
"...Yeah. Creepy." He shudders and nods at his brother. The faster they do this the faster they can get out of here. The place was heavy with...something, something big and scary and Alphonse would rather not have to think about it. So he shook himself instead, and he play-shoved Edward with his shoulder and started walking ahead of him, half-smiling.
Edward blinked over at his brother and just stared at him as he walked away for a few moments before he remembered that he was supposed to be going that way too. He smirked at Alphonse and nudged him back before turning his attention to the city itself, picking out familiar buildings and landmarks to find his way to the theater and hoping that nobody was home.
"So, the stones are in the theater? That's where - " He stopped himself, because this really wasn't the time to think about things that, technically, didn't even happen. Instead, he grinned, and spoke. "Hey, brother. I bet I can get there before you." Without even waiting for an answer, he started to run, grin spreading even wider. He hadn't ran in his body yet, and he never thought it would've been something he had missed.
Edward knew where that sentence had been going, and he was damn glad that Alphonse had stopped where he had. A challenge, however, was something that he couldn't ignore, especially when his little brother was cheating! "Hey!" he shouted, chasing after the younger boy. "No fair! Get back here you little cheater!"
"I'm not a little cheater! A cheater, maybe!" He calls back at Edward, laughing and running faster, knowing his words would only make him speed up even more.
