The listener's relationship with the record is dynamic.
Shifts in technology and manipulation ("style") can and will change the music being recorded... thus what listeners and peers will begin to identify as x or y or z. Probably, most changes will happen subtly and 'under the nose' of the listener. But, it should not happen that musicians and creators of the record be oblivious to these subtle changes. Dramatic changes are more noticeable and so does ease the task of detecting, but does require the challenge be met by relevant parties to anticipate and accommodate (or utilize) these shifts.
Ultimately, the gurus and practitioners of recording are responsible for shaping the audio-scape we digest during sound reproduction.
