So, some things have changed with my work situation since last year. I applied for the job I had been doing at Nashua High School North as well as some jobs in Andover and Somerville. All the jobs fell through. Nashua North opted to move a middle school teacher up to the high school with the reasoning that they had more experience than me (which is totally true). Another music teacher at that school was then moved into the band director position, leaving open the general music job. I was recommended by both the principal at North and the chorus teacher at North for that position. I interviewed and was offered the job. The jobs having already fallen through in Andover and Somerville, I took it. A few weeks later, the chorus teacher announced she would not be returning. I was then offered this job instead. I opted to remain in the position I was hired for, with the reasoning that I would have more to offer the general music classes. Another first year teacher has been hired for the choral director position, making our department full of fresh young ideas (the band director is in his 5th year of teaching and 2nd at our school)!
For those wondering,
this is my school.
Today was my first day. My room gets very hot in the last two periods. There is still FCS (Food and Consumer Sciences) equipment waiting to be moved out of my room. My computer wouldn't log me on all day (this has since been remedied). I also did not see two of my classes as the first 2 hours of school were devoted to acclimating students to the school again. Besides those few setbacks, the day went very well. Students were responsive (one even said I was cool, high praise from a middle schooler!), mostly well-behaved, and I have an almost 2 hour gap in the middle of my day (I was afraid I'd miss that from my time at North). All in all, things are off to a good start.
Now I just need to get the rest of my trimester planned...
