This is a response I made to some comments in my friend Flenke's Livejournal after November 2. After my previous post, I thought this would be appropriate.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Point #1:
Being pro-choice does not mean you can't be anti-abortion. Pro-choice supports a woman's right to choose. I disagree with abortion. I feel that too many people use it as a means for birth control. But it's not my place, or the government's, to tell a woman how to run her body.
Point #2:
Daddy Bush said "no new taxes" and he tried very hard to keep it that way. He even vetoed legislation calling for new taxes but his veto was overturned by the Democrat controlled Congress.
A better argument would be to look at some of George W. Bush's promises from the 2000 election and see how well they held up. He didn't have a Congress controlled by the opposite party, so what's his excuse?
Point #3:
Bush's message IS consistent. It holds to the following ideals:
1. Infringement on civil liberties
2. Promototion of racism, sexism and fundamentalism
3. Destroying the environment
4. Pushing the agendas of corporations
5. Hurting education (yes, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry did vote YES on No Child Left Behind legislation; that still doesn't mean they were right either)
6. Dismantling alliances
7. Unnecessarily risking the lives of American soldiers (through putting them to war and through pay cuts and lack of necessary protective equipment)
8. Damaging the financial security of our country
9. Accepting religion over science
There are plenty of arguments and points to be made. These were just a few that stuck out to me.
And to stop it before anyone tries to bring it up, I do not take my country for granted. I live in America. It is one of the best countries in the world. But America is slowly losing its ideals of freedom and liberty. That's what matters to me. I want to be proud of my country and not just say that at least we're better off than some other country.
