Watching a Song [closed to songofasong]

This day was turning out much more eventful that Methos had ever imagined it might. He'd reluctantly agreed to meet with another researcher working for the Watchers in order to assist on a portion of their research. He wasn't about to argue due to the higher ups dissatisfaction with his lack of progress on the Methos chronicle ( Read more... )

Kate had been working for the Watchers for many years now. She had joined them the same way most had - quite by accident. Too curious for her own good, she had been led into a society built on centuries of research, of understanding a cause far greater than her own. Years later, she had become an experienced member of the team, and her time on the field had led her to taking on one of the more intriguing cases in the Paris branch ( ... )

He smiled as he stepped inside the office, looking around at the strewn about books and notes, "Don't worry about it, you should take a look at my office, it makes your office look immaculate."

Methos hands in his pockets, looked down at a set of notes on a side table, "So, they tell me you're working on researching an Immortal that met have met Methos?"

She found that hard to believe, but didn't pass comment, instead smiling at him in that self-depreciating away that thanked him for his understanding. Giving up her attempt to straighten things out, she nodded her head, going to pick up one of the files she had been looking through. She selected a sheet and passed it over to him, talking as she did.

"Yes, it seems our Immortals have crossed paths before, interesting, given neither of them lost their heads." She looked towards him, trying to gauge his expression to see his take on that.

"It's not impossible, but it is uncommon. Especially when they're as old as this." She smiled to herself, quietly proud of the fact she had this case. "She's the Eve to your Adam."

He took the sheet, looking it over, looking at the record of the meeting based on the Watcher's notes from 54 AD in the British Aisles. She'd definitely note the surprise in his expression, but it was for a different reason than she'd expected.

Who could they be talking about? Methos racked his brain as he continued to read on.

"Perhaps uncommon only because there aren't many meetings between very old Immortals. Being as old as they are, perhaps they have better things to do that fight." he smiled lightly, "Based on what I've read, Methos does his best to avoid a fight rather than seek it out. Such is the reason that he ever became so old. It may be the same with this woman?"

"I wouldn't be so sure," Kate told him, giving him a look that pre-empted her next move. Returning to the file, she began to pass him sheet after sheet, each detailing a different moment of her Immortal's life.

"750 AD, Tibet - 86 BC, Romania - 1812 AD, England - 1324 AD, Scotland," she reeled off quicker and quicker as she slapped each report into his arms. "1505, 1984, 1893, 1486, 561, 1991."

"All of those times, someone ended up dead."

She closed her file with a flourish, as though that made her point.

"But not him."

He took the sheet, listening as she rattled off the dates, stilling trying to think of what woman Immortal he knew that might still be alive today. The list wasn't even coming up to one.

But then on the list he saw a name, a presumed alias, Riva.

River.

Methos smiled, but was able to contain his laughter.

"Perhaps they were friends?" he offered her.

"That's what you're here to work out," Kate told him, leaning back against her desk and folding her arms. "Her locations are so sporadic. She crosses entire countries, sometimes in a matter of years. I don't think she's even settled down long enough to make friends." She shook her head to herself, but it was with a fond smile. To Watchers, their Immortal was like a family member, they cared about their well being, and it was always hard on their colleagues when their Immortal was killed.

It would be quite hard on him should his Immortal be killed. Heh.

Methos nodded, moving to sit, "Then lets cross-reference your records with mine to see if they were in the same place more than just his particular instance. There may just be something here."

Although Methos planned to keep those records of those places he'd ran into River out of what he'd provide to Kate. What? He could be an ass sometimes.

At his offer of help, Kate smiled, picking up the sheets she had been working from and rearranging them in chronological order. Perhaps together, with their shared knowledge of these two ancient souls, they might be able to find out a little more about their own Immortals.

But the fact that Kate was the Watcher of nothing more than a well-travelled human being?

Well, that might remain secret for a little while longer.

Yes, it would remain a secret forever if he could help it.

After providing Kate with as unhelpful information as he could manage, Methos left for the day.

He'd have to tell River of this the next time he saw her, perhaps they'd have a good laugh over it.

For now he was going to Le Blues bar for a drink.

Wherever an Immortal went, their Watcher followed, and for some, that meant their lives were in constant flux, moving from place to place in a bid to keep up with their roaming Immortal. But Joe Dawson, he had actually been able to make some roots in Paris. As Duncan MacLeod's Watcher - and friend - he was never far behind the old Highlander.

The Le Blues bar had become one of the popular points for his mismatched band of friends, and every so often, he would see familiar faces pass through, never ageing a day, while he soldiered on.

When the door sounded and Joe caught sign of that familiar long coat, he knew immediately who it was. With a wry smile, he already knew the order before Methos even reached the bar, and by the time he'd taken a seat on his usual stool, there was a glass in front of him.

"You look like you needed it," he said, chuckling to himself at his own joke.

Methos slid into his seat, flashing Joe a smile as he lifted the drink up to his lips without stopping a beat.

After swallowing, he spoke, "I always need it, Joe. But today more than most, certainly."

Leaning against the bar, Joe raised an eyebrow, looking intrigued by his words. "Let me guess, another hard day at work?" he asked, a knowing glint in his eye at the fact that Methos spent most of his day doing very little given who he was 'watching'.

"Yes, they actually made me do work today." he sighed. It was really quite cruel of them. "Met with another Watcher, Kate, apparently she'd working on researching another Immortal. Needed my expertise."

"Oh, yeah, Kate. She was talking to me about that!" A sudden grin appeared on Joe's weathered face, making those bright eyes sparkle with mischief. "I'm the one who recommended you!" he announced, leaning over to give him a hearty slap on the shoulder.

At that moment, another customer conveniently stepped up to the bar to place an order, and Joe turned away chuckling, aware that Methos' glare was most likely burning a hole into him.

Oh, it most definitely was. If looks could kill. But, ultimately he was glad for leaning of Kate's work. Learning about River being tracked by the Watchers.

His glare was broken quickly though as he felt the buzz of another Immortal. He looked around, wanting to be sure it was friend and not foe.

When he spotted MacLeod walking in from the back, he relaxed, going back to sipping his beer, giving him a nod.

"Methos." Duncan nodded back, sliding into a seat beside him. Methos grimaced a bit, glancing around at all the people around and then turning his irritated glare on the Highlander for saying his name so openly.

It hadn't been the first time, but come on, he had an identity he was trying to maintain here!
