This wasn't going to plan at all. Perhaps it was because Cassidy hadn't joined them this time. When River had found Methos in 1899, she wouldn't have bargained herself on mounting a horse only hours later and riding off into the sunset with the infamous Wild Bunch. Although River's morals were sometimes hard to pin down, she wasn't a ruthless criminal by nature. But somehow, she had agreed to this, knowing full well what she was taking part in. Part of it was for the thrill of riding with the Wild Bunch, part of it was to try and shake off the bitterness that she currently carried with her. She had broken out of her Stormcage Cell for the first time and not gone straight to the Doctor. Instead, she had travelled alone and had ultimately travelled to see Methos ( ... )

Methos burst through the back door just as the gun was fired and the bullet broke the glass of the other door. Thinking quickly, he tackled the deputy to the ground so that he wouldn't get a second shot at River. Eventually, after some struggle, he was able to knock the gun from his grip and knock him out.

Hearing the struggle behind her, River quickly turned to see Methos tackling and disarming the deputy. "Thank you, sweetie!" she called as she picked up her pace, hurrying through the shattered door and into the next fray.

He took the now unconscious deputy's gun and holstered it. Methos quickly followed behind her.

"You're welcome, hun." he said back, jokingly. He'd already determined that she was behind him on the timeline and for her they hadn't moved past anything but innocent flirting. He was acting accordingly.
