Seaside, Reality's Theater [open :D]

There were merits in coming to the beach to sulk.. or simply to think. Lumine was unsure which he was doing-- the strange, cold upwelling of disappointment after his foray into the Nexus felt almost alien, and yet Axl's steady presence in the back of his mind was still quiet, deeply asleep after he'd pushed himself to the limits of exhaustion ( Read more... )

Netto was, first and foremost, an eleven year old boy. Eleven year old boys like playing at the beach. So every once in a while, Netto made a point to go there after school (and usually after his homework was done, so that neither his parents nor the various versions of his brother didn't harp on him about it). Sometimes he saw people he knew, sometimes he didn't, but either way he had fun playing in the sand and water.

Today, he saw Axl. "Oi! Axl!" he called out, waving enthusastically as he changed his course to intercept the reploid.

"Hmm?" Lumine turned, watching the little human dashing across the sand-- kicking up quite a lot of it in the process. Borrowed impressions and memory helpfully supplied a name-- Netto-- and relationship-- one of Axl's young friends, and a trainee Maverick Hunter.

"Netto. How are you?" Lumine said, trying to match Axl's speech pattern and wincing internally when he failed miserably.

Netto blinked at the odd sound of "Axl's" voice. He pulled up to a stop in front of the other Hunter. "I'm okay," he said. "What's wrong with your voice?" If Axl had been human, his first guess would have been a cold, but mechanicals don't get colds, do they? There was something else... off about Axl, but Netto couldn't pin it down right away.

"Nothing is wrong with my voice," Lumine said, nodding slightly to emphasize the thought. There was silence for a moment before Lumine decided that something else needed to be said-- humans tended to hate having long pauses in conversation, even if there was nothing more to be said on a given subject.

"How has school been?"

If Lumine didn't think it was a problem - whatever it was - then Netto wasn't going to bother him about it, especially since it didn't sound serious. It just sounded a little funny, that was all. "It's okay, I guess. I'm having a hard time with math, but I'm doing pretty good in my computer science class. What about you? What've you been up to?" Netto perked up. "You gonna come to any of my training sessions?"

The child's perky behavior actually managed to get a bit of a smile from him. "When you learn to do the figuring, math will get easier for you. Much of it is based on the same sort of logic that computer programs are written with.

"I've been in the ruins. The Defense Force asked me to hunt down one of the more dangerous gangs." It was completely truthful, really-- their shared body had certainly had a time of it stalking around the ruins.

"Where and when are you training now? I haven't kept caught up with your training schedule for obvious reasons."

"That's what everyone keeps telling me, but it's just easier to do the computer math than it is to do the stuff in math books. I dunno why. I just know it's not so boring."

Netto was greatly impressed by "Axl's" tale of the ruins and hunting dangerous gangs there, and it showed in how he looked at his friend. "I've only been the ruins once. I kinda got chased out, but that was before I got any training. Someday, I'm gonna go back."

"My next training session is Saturday morning at ten," he said. Then he grinned. "If you come, you better watch out. I've learned some new tricks!"

"Pure logic usually is easier," Lumine said, a little sympathetically. He preferred the beauty of equations without all the messy solving and arithmetic.

"When you're bigger, I don't see why not. Though you'll have to wait until you're finished growing before you can be fitted for battle armor," Lumine said thoughtfully. "I'll make sure to keep that in mind. I'll try to make it, barring any new missions."

Netto nodded. That sounded like as good an explanation as any. "Actually, it's not the armor that's keeping me from going back. See, when me and Rockman cross fuse, our armor's pretty good. It's just that Zero wants me to get more training before I start fighting any real enemies." That wasn't to say that once he was older he wouldn't get new armor. It'd be nice to be able to fight on his own. He couldn't always count on Rockman being there for him to cross fuse with.

He smiled at Lumine's promise to try to make it. "Great! I hope I'll see you!"

"Zero knows what he's doing. He's done it for a very long time. I'd listen to him." Lumine nodded a little, smiling back at the boy's smile.

"As do I."

"Yeah, I know," Netto said. "That's why I haven't gone back yet." Part of the reason, anyway. The other part had to do with his father telling him not to, but he felt confident that once Zero approved, his father would, too. "Well, I'm gonna go play in the ocean now. You gonna join me?"

"I.." That brought Lumine up short-- play wasn't something he'd particularly been allowed to indulge in, and vivid associations from Axl's memory made him practically physically itch to try it for a moment.

"All right. Yes." If Lumine's eyes were a little wide at the unusal occurence of an idea completely bypassing his common sense to blurt out his mouth, well, no one was really keeping score. He slipped down from the stage, bare feet sinking into the warm sand, and paused to retreive his shoes. "Lead on."

Netto grinned, oblivious to the momentousness of this occassion, and turned to jog down to the edge of the water. He paused to take off his shoes and his shirt, then whooped loudly as he dashed into the water. "Come on in! The water's great!" he shouted back to Lumine. Of course, the moment Lumine entered the water, Netto fully intended to do everything in his power to thoroughly soak the reploid. Not that he was going to say that

Lumine followed Netto's example and stripped off the shirt he was wearing before walking out into the surf cautiously, off-balance from the way the waves dragged at his body, though he was far too strong and fast to end up knocked off his feet.

The water was certainly a relief after walking across the sand to reach it, though he wouldn't put the word great to it. "Now what?"

"Now we play," Netto said, a mischievous gleam in his eyes. Then, without warning, he launched a watery assault on his companion, hitting the water with slightly bent hands to send a large spray of water in Lumine's direction.

..which hit Lumine full in the face, since he hadn't been expecting it. Sputtering, he shook the water out of his face and scowled before cupping his hands and mimicking Netto's splash, waiting for an incoming wave so that the resulting arc of water would be larger and higher.
