"Phoenix, this is Oracle, do you copy? I've hit the safehouse with Paladin and am live. Standing by for your final approach."Sitting in the passenger seat of the rental car, Special Agent Brittany Colefield doesn't so much as make a move toward the earpiece in her ear, knowing ( Read more... )

She'd paused by the entrance, watching the area for any sign of trouble.
Her own revolver's a comforting weight under her jacket. She has a few other items tucked away, including a tiny plastic container of mace and
a knife. Hopefully they won't find *everything*. She doubts it, but
worth a try.
Scully notes the building's exterior. The place looks forbidding, though that may just be her mood. She's on edge, as always before a mission where
she knows someone's at high risk. Several someones, in this case. Don't let fear overwhelm you, but don't ignore it or your instincts either.

"Here goes nothing." It's been years since she was here. 2003, something like that, coming back to find out what had happened to Tom. Even then, she hadn't even really known these people, how this place worked. All of that was gleaned from Tom's own knowledge, and he hadn't been here in a while, either ( ... )

She stands off to the side, watching the men's faces. Carter gives her a sharp look, but most of his attention is on Brittany as they
talk.
Scully doesn't trust either of them. That thought makes her smile
wryly. Power games. If she took a higher position in the Bureau,
would she end up playing them too? Inevitably?

Though that might be a moot point, given their current circumstances.
She listens to them talk, politely, but with an edge under the words.
Cuts through the banter.
"Sorry to interrupt old home week, but we had another matter to
discuss."

It's Harry that jumps on the matter first. "Yes, you said this was about Tom. I thought we'd handled that situation," and he was glaring at Brittany ( ... )

Scully's voice is cool as she addresses Harry. "If you don't believe Agent Colefield can ensure the man's...good behavior,
then perhaps you should have considered this sooner. Surely by
now you'd know if he'd betrayed 'sensitive' information?"
She raises an eyebrow. "And is that the biggest concern you
have now, gentlemen?" Subtle diversion, probing for information.
The more extreme possibility, that Lindsay might be serving
MI5's purposes if not on their 'payroll', had also crossed her
mind.

"There are certain protocols to be followed when an agent leaves the Service," Pearce explained shortly. "I worked with Tom Quinn for years. If anyone should be concerned about his well-being, it's me. But he's - he was too much of an asset to be just put back into the intelligence community."

"No, that's not what I'm talking about." Brittany shook her head. "He becomes a consultant to me at CTU. He's there for advising purposes. He doesn't go into the field unless extreme or specific circumstances merit it. I'm sorry, but if he's in the room when someone tries to kill me, I'd like him to be able to help. You want me to say it? I need him to get this job done."

There was another random pause, and Adam Carter looked across the table at Brittany. "Can I have a word with you for a moment?" he asked casually, and she nodded. The two of them disappeared from the room.
