[a great plume of dust appears along with two tall, skinny people covered head to foot in said dust, as well as a lovely mix of sand and whatever else might have been on the grounds outside of a munitions factory (now former). despite their extremely dirty appearance, both men appear to be in high spirits even if they are a bit wounded thanks to flying bits of debris. currently, they’re speaking in Ceressian as the dust settles around them.]
See, much quieter here. Can hear ourselves think again! [the Doctor sticks a hand in his hair, giving it a good shake before he opens his mouth to speak, dust and tiny pieces of rubble flying out] Probably all for the best, anyway.
[Oliver looks at him rather incredulously, coughing through the dusty cloud for a moment before he responds] Probably? I bet they think we're mad now. [he pauses, looking rather alarmed] Bloody hell, we're still doing it! Aren't we? What is this?
[the Doctor looks pretty nonplussed by the fact that the Gondovan police might think they're a bit barmy.] Yeeeep, we still are. I wish I knew what language it was. Believe it or not, it's one that I don't actually know or have heard at all, but there's still something about it that I can’t quite put my finger on. Give me a mo', I'll figure it out soon enough. But look at it this way! It's like getting the Rosetta Stone installed directly into your head while it simultaneously wipes out every other language you know.
[raises an eyebrow at him] And you think that's a good thing? How are we supposed to talk to anybody else now? We don't know English or--or anything anybody else here speaks! Or most anywhere, probably, if you don't know what it is. [sighs] It would happen now, wouldn't it? [gives the stars above a rather annoyed look] Well. [his expression brightens a bit] At least Mikaeja's safe now.
[rubs the back of his neck, shaking out whatever got caught in the collar of his long coat] Well, I never said it was a "good" thing. I can't even begin to tell you how much time I spent learning them all--and that's just for Earth! [lets out puff of air as he thinks, a smile soon gracing his face as he reaches out to slap Oliver on the back. when he speaks again, he accidentally switches into Binary] Wonderful job though; brilliant eve--oh. [makes a face and speaks again] Well, that's new--well, at least I know this one, but it's really odd speaking it. [leans in a bit closer to Oliver] Can you understand me? Hold up one finger if you can and none if you can't.
[smiles back, clearly happy about the way things turned out. that expression quickly turns to one of puzzlement, however, and he just stares at the Doctor for a moment because that is too weird. he's still speaking in Ceressian] I don't know how, but I know what you just said. Which is good 'cause I wouldn't've known what to do if I couldn't. [gives him a look that says his methods could use some improvement] Can you still understand me?
I'll just pretend you held up one finger then, shall I? [sighs slightly and pokes Oliver on the forehead] Seems to me that the reason you and I can understand each other in whatever you're speaking and Binary, which I'm speaking right now--and boy, how useful that'd be on half a dozen different planets right about now--is because we both can speak the same two languages. [his face splits into a grin] Isn't that handy?
[frowns, repeating the Doctor in an attempt to switch into his language--which works, and he begins to speak in Binary] The same two languages? ...whoa. What the... [trails off. speaking Binary is really, really weird] Did we get hit over the head? Or...you think everybody on the Plane's speaking Binary all of a sudden?
[raises an eyebrow] We were just involved in something that resulted in our current dusty attire, so there's every chance that the explosion did scramble something in our brains--but! Because of Mystery Language One, I'd say we've got the Plane to blame for this. [switches back to Ceressian and turns slightly away to shout] Oi, you lot! Can you hear me now? [gives Oliver a discreet wink and cheeky grin, and then says under his breath] I've always wanted to say that.
[ooc: Ten and Oliver have used their merger on Gondovan to rescue Mikaeja together. Unfortunately, this involved an explosion quickly followed by the breakdown of the universal translator. But luckily, the stars aligned so they both speak Ceressian and Binary. Join the language shenanigans!]
