[Sherlock has the luck of being an empath at the moment and this is just painful. Of course, besides twitching from all these feelings, he manages to get out a bit of wit.]
[As if he didn't say anything at all, Alex just keeps going. For Sherlock, it's probably as if he is hearing one side of a phone conversation.]
You shouldn't have followed me here, sweetheart. I know, I know. I promise, I'll be home soon, as soon as I'm done here. Yes, Molly, you will have the best birthday ever, I promise. I love you, too.

You are hallucinating. Your daughter is not here. You need to wake up.
[Alex is still smiling cluelessly, but something falters in her gaze.

Have you seen a little girl? She was here, right here, only a moment ago.
[Alex's face goes expressionless for a minute, and she seems to pull herself out of the haze. Shaking her head gently, she stares at the girl in front of her.]
[her eyes widen, and her mind is struck by so many memories of children torn from their parents, in one way or another] I'm sorry. It's happening to a lot of us - seeing people...people we want to be there.
[reaches into one of her long coat's many pockets, pulls out a worn but clean piece of cloth, and offers it to Alex]

I've been away from her a long time. I suppose it's something a parent never gets used to.
