[She knows they're not coming back.
She spends the whole day waiting in a house too big and a room too silent. Voices passing by sneak in through the windows, coming from unfamiliar people talking about unfamiliar things, but she looks to the door every time. Each time, she feels a little bit sillier. But before she can tell herself to stop worrying, she's already glancing back up at a passing shadow or a rustle of leaves outside -- and left staring as the house falls back into silence.
Too soon, the light sinks away from the windows. She sits there for a while, thinking traitorous thoughts about tomorrow and the day after, and what life will be like without any of the people who know her likes and dislikes, her hopes and fears, or what she's like when she's alone. She knows that she's been lucky, that most of the people here arrived without knowing anybody, but that doesn't make the living room feel any less empty.
When it's too dark to make out the clock, she gets up and turns on the light. And then she opens her journal and speaks for the first time that day.]
Hi, guys. If any of you knew Jale or Asad, they've been sent back home. I hope it's not too much trouble. If either of them were working on something with any of you, I'll do my best to help you out instead.
