Um, hi, guys. This might be a sore subject, and I understand if you'd rather not answer, but... I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing what their death penalties were like. I'm trying to figure something out.

[The mention of death penalties catches his attention, but.... Kain almost doesn't want to answer.]

Why do you want to know?

I want to get a better idea of what kind of penalty a friend of mine received.

...oh.

[He pauses a long moment before getting at a reply.]

They can vary considerably, sometimes apparent right away, other times taking a while to notice. So it's been with mine, at least...

[Maybe she's reading it wrong, but she's curious enough to have to ask...]

Have you gotten death penalties more than once?

[She has it right, it's just that someone is being Mr. Reluctant in getting to that part. But after a moment he does finally respond.]

Three of them.

[Three?! If this were a voiced thread, Kain would probably be getting an overly loud exclamation like that from his journal, but since it's not...]

Wow... They aren't all from the war, are they?

[...it's probably for the best it's not voiced, then, since Kain would not be amused by making such a big deal of it.]

They are, but mostly the circumstances behind those were ...complicated. [By a demon. Who Kain admittedly attacked first both times he was killed by him, but he's not going into that much detail.]

I've since had one of the three lifted.

Um... If I might ask, why haven't you had the other two removed?

It was a while before I even knew that removal was possible... and I've been reluctant to trust the thought of being intentionally kidnapped. [Plus various experiments and drafts disrupting life every so often. And all the dying.]

Also, John is only able to remove one at a time.

[That, she did not know. +1 information.]

Yeah, the kidnapping part of it doesn't sit well with me, either. But they didn't do anything funny to you when they took off the first penalty, right?

The initial return is much like being sent back from a kidnapping. I needed time to regain my strength, and to be able to... control what had been returned.

But there were no other side effects... All right, thank you.

I'll understand if you'd rather not answer this, but what kind of penalties did they give you?

[Again there is a looong time of reluctance in which Kain debates even bothering to answer. But ever since he's gotten that wind one fixed, he's had an easier time bringing it up. It's less painful now that the time spent that way is only a memory.]

The loss of my voice, my resistance to magic and... my wind affinity.

...The latter means the most to me. Thus it was the first one I had restored.

[When the message pops up, Marica's a bit surprised. She thought he might've opted not to answer, so she'd gotten up for a snack. After taking a seat again, she gives it a read and her mouth makes an "O" of understanding. So that's why it's a written response...]

They seem to like taking people's voices away. Are you really not going to get it back, though? It must be hard not being able to talk.

I manage. [He doesn't care to let on how frustrating it can be on occasion.] I'll have it restored eventually.

That's good.

[She taps the end of her pen on the table for a couple before writing again.] I think that's all the questions I have. Is there anything you want to add?
