Um, hi, guys. This might be a sore subject, and I understand if you'd rather not answer, but... I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing what their death penalties were like. I'm trying to figure something out.

[Well, he can always spare an answer for someone trying to figure something out...]

What exactly would you like to know about it?

A friend of mine has a death penalty, but... well, we're not entirely sure what it is. I think he's lost some memories, but I wanted to see if it's happened to other people before making a conclusion.

Ahhh. [softly.

But his tone is matter-of-fact] It might be hard to narrow down. I've heard of memory-loss being the case, before. Memories of home, memories of one person, memories that fall within a certain timeframe...

But just as often, penalties are physical. [......] I lost the use of my left arm. But my memories weren't affected.

I see... That might be it, then. I just wasn't sure if he was a different person altogether.

A "different person"?

From a different world than mine. Since there are an infinite number of worlds, it wouldn't be impossible for him to be from a similar world where he didn't have these memories to begin with.

Oh-- right. [pause]

You say that pretty confidently. Are "other worlds" an idea you've become accustomed to here, or is your own world like that?

Ah, sorry. In my world, it's not a widely known thing, but are these things called "Gateways" that used to connect all of the worlds. We've had lots of doubles come to our world that way, and sometimes there would only be a slight difference between them and the people we knew.

Huhh... so-- it sounds like you've had to deal with this variety of confusion before?

Right. We've had people that looked like identical twins, so... Well, now that I think about it, the chances that we came from the same exact world are actually pretty slim.

"We" being-- ? You and this friend?

Oh, sorry. Yes, I meant my friend. I mean, I think he's the same person I know, but in a crazy place like this, you never know.

Hmm. That's an interesting thought. Usually we think of this place as changing the individual person.

I hadn't thought much about that person being exchanged for one of the same.

Right? Though I guess it's not much use thinking about it...
