You've heard of the figurative "cry for help," as with suicide attempts?
Well, I call this a "cry for retirement." Sanford is a very smart man. He had to know he would get caught. The governor being absent for 4-5 days, incommunicado, leaving either no news or a false hiking story with his staff, and leaving no word at all with his family or the Lt. Governor? No way that doesn't get laser-beam attention from the press.
I hypothesize that Sanford was just tired of politics. Horrible as the affair was, I almost think that was incidental: he wanted to (HAVE TO) retire. And now he will, no later than the end of his current term, but possibly sooner.
On Michael Medved's radio show today, he speculated that the Argentinian Firecracker might even have been the current president, Cristina de Kirschner. Why? Apparently, it was easier for the Governor of South Carolina to go to Argentina over Father's Day weekend than it was for the Other Woman to leave the country. Now, why would that be? A) The Other Woman is really poor and can't afford a plane ticket? B) The Other Woman is for some reason barred from the U.S.? or C) She's well-known and powerful and can't just up and go the way Sanford did. It's possible she may be some other high-up official or celebrity, but who else would have any occasion at all to be acquainted with Sanford in the first place?
Curiouser and curiouser. But stick a fork in him, he's done.
This has apparently been going on for a while. I would expect she would already have a visa if the two have known each other for years (even before the affair started).

I wouldn't impeach someone just because they had an affair. You have to leave that for significant breached of conduct...like lying under oath. ;)

The whole mess smacks of ugly political machines and deep disappointment for me.
