The problem with re-centering NASA is that it acts as a the organization that provides services for national defense and air safety. There is a strong connection between the air force, army, FAA, etc, and NASA.
National reconnaissance satellites are launched at least two+ times a year by NASA facilities and integrated on to the rockets by NASA. The actual rockets come from a Lockheed/Boeing mash-up called United Launch Alliance. I worked on a project at NASA this summer which could easily be taken into the defense sector. I'm not allowed to say much about it due that possibility.
Many centers are also doing work for the FAA and the air transportation industry. They test wing designs, optimize things for flight controllers, research pilot fatigue, and more. I never worked much in that branch, but what I heard was pretty awesome. They once stuck a helicopter in a wind tunnel to test it out. Pretty awesome stuff.
The flashy part of NASA is space, but the other things are just as big a part of the agency. Ames, Glenn, Langley all do pretty cool aeronautics research. Langley also does some cool work on robotics.
