I was watching coverage of the conflict in Lebanon and was not really surprised to see the supporters of Hezbollah state that they teach their children from birth to hate Israel.
Out of such a culture of hate comes nothing of value. This culture infests Lebanon and threatens the fragile democracy that is evolving there. This situation is a microcosm of the larger global situation where cultures of hate infest the movements toward global democracy, including the organization that you think would be at the forefront of defending and promoting such movements: the United Nations.
This is yet another test that the United Nations is failing. They are nowhere to be found. When they do make an appearance they will be as impotent as ever. Only when we get rid of this sham organization will be be able to build a real global organization that fosters democracy and freedom.
Until then it is as useless as the cultures of hate that infest it. So too will Lebanon be at the mercy of these cultures of hate unless someone is willing to help their democracy survive this test. In the absence of willing friends that someone should be the United States. Lebanon is not currently an ally but it is a future ally. We should not squander that opportunity or let it slip from our fingers for lack of resolve.
