In a surprising development Tom DeLay has announced that he will not seek re-election this year. DeLay easily won the Republican primary a few weeks ago and seemed poised to defend his seat against the Democrats in the fall.
Stating that he is putting the good of the party ahead of his own needs DeLay will resign later this spring. Governor Rick Perry has not stated whether he will call a special election to fill the seat or wait until the general elections in the fall.
In my opinion, DeLay has received bad news about either his legal battles or his re-election campaign. It may be that the money necessary to fund the campaign simply isn't coming in. I am sure we will learn more about this when DeLay actually resigns.
Either way, the Democrats have lost one of their major campaign issues. Without someone to run against Democrats are once again forced to consider running for something.
