Red Cross sends out "hit squad" to deflect attention from scandal

The Red Cross, stung by revelations that it wasted enormous amount of money courting celebrities instead of helping people recover from natural disasters has sent out celebrities to try and turn the attention back on the federal government.

Tim McGraw, a member of the American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, has paired up with Faith Hill to attack the President in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Methinks thou protests too much, Mr. McGraw. Have you returned the money you received from the Red Cross so they can spend it on actual victims of natural disasters? How humiliating it would be if you hadn't, eh? It would make people ashamed to live in this country where such bullshit goes on day after day.

Bullshit like this:
The Red Cross was reported last week to have paid consultants more than $500,000 (£285,000) in three years to recruit stars, pitch its name in Hollywood and promote its chief executive as the face of the charity.

A New York publicist receives $5,000 a month to lure celebrities and polish the charity's image in Hollywood, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

A company in California has been paid $114,000 to get the Red Cross included in story lines for film and television, and a Texas firm of image specialists won a contract for $127,000 to boost the profile of Marsha J Evans, the chief executive, a year before she left with a $780,000 severance package.

So, Mr. McGraw, how about a little more financial accountability and a lot less bullshit?
