In Clausewitzian terms, the leadership is always the center of gravity. Therefore, it makes sense to target the leadership above all else. Liquidating leadership has a more devastating effect the more virtical the government's leadership is, and Iran just happened to be a clerical oligarchy.

The United States, on the other hand, doesn't have such a virtical power structure. It can therefore be concluded a successful counter-attack by Hezbollah wouldn't wreck us as badly, and I'm pretty sure our current executive knows that if Hezbollah had the chance, they'd assassinate him anyway.

So, in principal, I have no problems with targeting leadership, and in practice, I also have no problem with it. The devil is in the execution. I wouldn't want it to look like Desert One or Desert Fox, and we have the image problem of needing it to not resemble terrorism, which further limits the options.

Someone with a diplomatic presence would probably be in the best shape for it.

What would our image be if we used Q Fever to incapacitate the Revolutionary Guard and other critical defense units while striking the leadership? After a day or two of waiting for symptoms, an airborne incusion would that be feasible. It would then be easy to snatch the leadership that didn't die in the initial strike.

Heh, an armored incursion might as well cross over from Iraq, the Afghan side, and Kuwait to liquidate obvious Hezbollah members. And sure, pull in as many as they could for interrogations.
Just don't tell anyone germs were involved!
