I actually saw the whole town hall meeting on C-SPAN the day after it happened, which was about a week ago, and Moran and Murtha did respond to the comment. They definitely let someone else talk right after the sergeant, but once they had a breather, they responded. I was actually disappointed that the person who put this up on the blog site didn't show the response (because I think the fact that it took them a second to think of an answer is important and more honest than having it appear like no answer came).
Basically they said what you'd expect the answer to be, that rather than having a role of ceremony and doing what's necessary to be re-elected, they're trying to make sure that troops are never put in harms way and supporting the troops through means that will actually show in their lives rather than for an hour at a homecoming ceremony.
But the blogger didn't feel it was necessary to let you see that.
But if I were in harms way (doing a job I volunteered for) I would like the representitives of my government to take one hour out of their lives to sit on a folding chair and at least try to pretend that they care.
What our armed forces are doing is HARD. It's hard being away from your family and in fear for life and limb. Regardless of what Moran and Murtha were doing during that homecoming celebration (and I have a hard time believing it was making sure that troops are not put in harm's way) by not being there, they were not showing the troops that they support them.
And supporting the troops without them knowing that you support them is point less.
The town hall was actually about 3 hours with Murtha being present for 2 of them, and one uniformed Army captain asked a question and Moran asked him for his contact information so they could talk about his concerns.
Basically you didn't see the town hall meeting and I can't blame you since it was on at an obscure hour of the morning on C-SPAN and the person who put it up on that website only showed you one single minute of it without showing you anything else.
And I do agree with what you said about the representatives not showing that they care, at least Jim Moran because it was his troops that made the comment, and it was a guy returned from Afghanistan, not Iraq which is where the issue comes from.
Oh, the hour I meant was the homecoming ceremony... it was mentioned that it was an hour ceremony? Regardless, no, I didn't see the meeting and I do wish the response had been on the website.
But also, if you're going to say you are speaking for all the troops, and someone stands up and says "that's not true, this is my experience" maybe you're not actually speaking for all the troops?
