Have you heard about COICA? Wired had this to say:

The content companies have tried suing college students. They’ve tried suing internet startups. Now they want the federal government to act as their private security agents, policing the internet for suspected pirates before making them walk the digital plank.

In short, COICA is an extension of ACTA.

I've had someone give me a follow up story that claims that a Democrat Oregon senator has procedurally killed the bill by placing a hold on it that takes effect until the incoming Congress convenes.

They could try to outlaw file sharing websites but they can't reach outside the US.

These people really don't understand how the WWW works.
