Right, so today I was on campus, and a lot of people I know are involved in the student government there. So stopping by the student government office on the way to grab lunch after class, I learn that there is Trouble right here at SCSU, and that starts with T and that rhymes with G and that stands for GLBT.
This weekend was homecoming weekend, and of course every organization that wants to enters their candidates for homecoming queen. Student government had a gay man (I believe his name is Foo or Fu, I'm not sure of the spelling) run for queen. He won.
Now apparently, even though the student body itself elected him as queen, there are a great many students and allumni that are pissed as hell. It probably doesn't help that all the elected royalty are people of color, because this town is so painfully white it hurts.
So when we get to student government, Tabitha is there getting the news too. People there are trying not to press panic buttons, but the student government and GLBT community on campus are being told to "be careful." As in, there have been death threats and hate mail pouring in at both the GLBT Alliance office (even though it was not their candidate that was elected) and at student government.
Basically this means that I get to worry that my rainbow-colored "Pride" and "Ally" pins will get me beaten or worse if I'm at the wrong place at the wrong time. Everyone is being advised to not walk around campus alone, especially at night.
