Grin! Are you sure they weren't playing the "let's pretend to be dumb Americans and see how long we can say stupid things before he realises we are making fun of him?" game?
I travelled back from three weeks in Japan where I'd been all around Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Nikko and a bunch of other places, travelling on subway, overground train, bus, bullet train, ferry etc. and staying in everything from five star hotels to small ryokan (traditional guest houses) and even in an onsen (bath house)... the people in the seats next to me had won a two-week trip to Tokyo (specifically to a hotel in Shinjuku, which is the glitzy part of Tokyo with designer shops and expensive nightlife) ... they had travelled from the airport to Shinjuku by taxi (I believe), and then stayed in Shinjuku for the entire two weeks, before heading back to northern England. They never rode the subway, saw the Tokyo tower or the fishmarket, I don't think they had sushi, and they saw nothing else of Japan ... I was totally boggled. But they had had a good enough time, though I think they were a little lost, as they had done no preparation for the trip, so they just showed up, spoke English and only went to tourist places that were close to their hotel.
