I'm not going to go into a big rant about what's been happening in the real world lately - Paris, Beirut, basically anywhere where there's people - because I'm personally sick and tired of reading people's half-baked opinions on social media. All I will say is, it makes me sad, and I wept a little tear when I heard about Paris.
Anyway, here's some stuff I've been enjoying lately:
- The Great Pottery Throw Down - sure it looks rubbish, like a rip-off Bake-Off but with pottery, but it's actually brilliant. I rate it at least third, after Bake-Off and Great British Sewing Bee and definitely ahead of the Big Painting Challenge and the one about interior design. Basically, I will watch any old crap if it's an arty-crafty competition on BBC2.
- Peep Show - so happy this is back, but also sad it's finally going to end.
- Josh - anyone seen the first episode of this? It's got Josh Widdicombe and Elis James in it as two hapless flatmates. It's just like Scrotal Recall, if anyone else remembers that (just me?). It's OK, but no laugh out loud moments yet, but I'm going to give it time to build up. I did go and rewatch an episode of Badults right afterwards, though, just to prove that flatshare sitcoms can be funny. Josh Widdicombe (and Elis James) are both a lot funnier in real life than they are in this.
- Brooklyn - this film, though. I went home last weekend for a quick break, and this was not the right thing to watch the night before leaving Ireland. I started crying pretty much as soon as it started. Saoirse Ronan is incredible and I want her to get an Oscar for this.
- The Lobster - the weirdest film I've seen in a long while, but very very good. And what a cast - Colin Farrell! Rachel Weisz! Lea Seydoux! Olivia Colman! Michael Smiley! And of course my own personal favourite Ben Whishaw. On that note, has anyone been watching 'London Spy'? If so, can you recommend it, or it is a bit gory?
- Rhik Samadder's series in the
Guardian, entitled 'Inspect A Gadget'. It's very funny and I have joined those people who comment Below The Line in fancying Rhik more than a little bit.
