Notes: 18.000 words. This is a sorting AU in which Draco somehow manages to earn Harry's trust or at least, his tentative friendship, at Madam Malkin's, but, like in the author's “The If Sieve”, after Harry's sorted into Slytherin because of him, he manages to fuck things up by approving of the Dark Lord because his father does and implying his trying to kill Harry was right. From then on they try to ignore each other, dividing the Slytherin first years between them, but they are constantly drawn together, both by chance and by their own irrepressible interest in each other. They being eleven this reads as very confrontational pre-slash, since the intensity of their relationship can hardly be platonic.
Also, I’m pretty sure the title is an Austen-reference, which just rocks.
