this prompt at the
Glee Kink Meme. Also, this fic is really revolved around Finn hate, but the prompt was too. I'm sorry if anyone's offended, Finn just really grinds my beans.
Summary: Sam Evans regretting letting his goals slip away from him first semester. This time, he's going all out.
Word Count: ~1,400
Even though he was totally gypped by that 23-year-old tackling him in football, Sam had really high hopes about the basketball season. For one, it was a lot harder to get injured too badly, and for another, he knew for a fact he was a lot better than Finn. Plus, he learned that it was better to not be passive about things he wanted. In a school like McKinley, you had to be a go-getter, or get nothing at all.
That was mainly his downfall the first time around. Although he had managed to get the quarterback position from Finn (for a while, anyway), it wasn’t because he proved he was better. He got lucky, then had taken it for granted, and got his ass handed to him in the form of a dislocated shoulder. It was beyond stupid that he let his focus drop, and he wasn’t letting it happen again.
There was another thing he was taking into consideration for this semester as well: Kurt Hummel. Puck had stolen Quinn from him, and while he was totally pissed about losing that sliver of popularity as well, there were bigger fish to fry. Kurt was back at McKinley and fabulous as ever, re-joining the Cheerios and making himself known. Being part of Sue Sylvester’s brigade had its advantages, and even when he wasn’t in eyesight of some Cheerios or the ring leader herself, his fierce disposition put off anyone with intentions to mess with him. There was no stopping him now.
That was one thing Sam liked most about him, pre-Karofsky days. He dressed and acted how he liked, and let no one tell him otherwise. Aside from the duet incident, he didn’t care what other people had to say and lived by his own set of rules, ones that no one could edit but himself. He was the ultimate HBIC, and he was gorgeous as hell, making him prime real estate that Sam had every intention of snatching up.
If there was any doubt about him chasing after Kurt, Finn Hudson was the deciding factor. For some unknown reason, the guy was the most popular kid in school, despite the fact that he was dumber than a box of rocks, and Sam wasn’t having it. He’d heard about the huge fallout between Finn and Kurt last year and had been involved in Finn’s homophobic rampages earlier this year, and while many people in this school were okay with these things happening, he wasn’t. Finn was going down, to be exposed as the homophobic asshole he was, and Sam was going to take his place. Since Finn didn’t even have Rachel anymore, this was going to be easy as pie.

The second week back from break, the first that they had Glee, he found himself sitting next to Kurt in the choir room after school. Kurt, Mercedes and Quinn were the only ones there when he walked in, and the girls were on the riser below him, so he made his way over to the group and took a seat.
“Can we help you, white boy?” Mercedes asked, looking over at him warily.
“Nah, this seat just looked fantastic today.” He gave her a wide smile, to which she just shrugged and carried on what she was saying. The three were talking about something involving manicures and a nail polish sale, something he wasn’t particularly interested in, so he settled for sitting back in his seat and letting them go at it. Not too long after, he felt a yawn coming, and decided it was the perfect chance for a move, lame as it might have been. Stretching his arms as he yawned, he let his left fall to his side, but reached his right over to lie across the back of Kurt’s chair. Quinn lifted an eyebrow, but no one made any comment.
As he sat listening to their conversation, the rest of the club slowly started to file into the room. Most of them didn’t make any notice of what Sam was doing, but he knew it’d change as soon as Finn walked into the room. Sure enough, Finn immediately zeroed in on Sam and Kurt.
“Uh, Sam? What are you doing?” Finn asked. To anyone else it would have been a normal question, but to everyone in the choir room, they knew it meant more. Kurt instantly tensed, Quinn winced and Mercedes scoffed. Sam thought he might have even seen Rachel jump up but his eyes were trained on Finn and Finn only.
“Sitting. Is there a problem?” He made sure to put a slight challenge in his tone, almost daring Finn to object while in a room full of people. Finn’s eyes moved between him and Kurt a couple times, and he swallowed hard before shaking his head.
“Nah, man. I was just wondering.” Averting his eyes quickly, he made his way over to sit by Rachel, completely dismissing Sam just in time for Mr. Schue to walk in. Kurt gave him a questioning glance, but said nothing as he sat back from the edge of his seat.
“Welcome back guys! I know we’re still a little off from break, but after a week we should be in the school mindset, right?” A few noncommittable sounds were made, but knowing Mr. Schue, he took them for agreement. “I figured this week we could do something easy, but something everyone would enjoy. You’re all going to be doing a solo about what you did during vacation!”
The room was instantly filled with chatter, everyone excited about solos as well as free reign of song choice. Schue seemed to get a little nervous about this.
“Obviously the songs have to be school appropriate,” he glanced at Puck and Santana, eyebrows raised, “but other than that, you can choose what you like. Make it about events, feelings, whatever. I want everyone to express themselves.”
As soon as Schue said ‘feelings,’ Sam had his song.

“So, any idea what song you’re choosing?” It was probably a little weird that he was so interested in talking to Kurt after the duets incident, but that was history. If he wanted to get into those gloriously tight pants, he was going to have to make conversation.
“Oh, I don’t know yet.” Kurt replied, veering off toward his locker. Sam followed.
“Come on, you’re Kurt Hummel. You must have some idea of what you want to sing.”
Kurt partially closed his locker door and looked at Sam, his stare hard and serious. “Why are you talking to me?”
“What?” He wasn’t going to lie; he was a little thrown off.
“Why do you suddenly find me so interesting all of a sudden? Shouldn’t you be with Quinn right now?”
“Actually, she dumped me for Puck.” Kurt’s stony expression softened immediately, and he opened his mouth to say what was more than likely some sort of apology, but Sam cut him off. “It’s no big deal, really. What I had with her was wrong, and I kind of regret it because she came between us. What I said before our duet was out of line, and I hope you’ll forgive me.”
As soon as he finished his apology, he knew he was in. Kurt’s jaw dropped slightly and his eyes widened, obviously surprised. Clearly the kid didn’t get apologies often.
“Sam, I didn’t-”
“No, it’s cool, I understand. I was a total ass all for a girl I never really liked, and I’m bothering you. I get it.” He turned to walk away, and the almost inaudible intake of breath sealed the deal. It was so easy to play the emotions of public school kids, especially cute little gay boys with little concept of real male friends.
“Sam, wait.” Long, thin fingers closed around his wrist, and he had to fight the smile on his lips. “You’re not bothering me. Trust me, if you were, you’d know. You’ll have to excuse me while I transition; I left here due to idiot neanderthals, and came back because the Warblers are all twats. I’m not exactly a people person right now.”
“But we’re cool?”
Kurt rolled his eyes at Sam’s word choice, but nodded. “Yeah, we’re… cool.”
“Awesome. You wanna hang out Wednesday? Maybe I can help you find your song for Glee.” Though he was obviously taken aback by the extended offer, he nodded.
“That sounds great."
