I had a very good con, marred only by my calico cat losing its head ("That wasn't supposed to happen.") and by realizing upon my return home that I had dropped my credit card at a dealer's table a few hours previously. I've already reported it lost, and there were no fraudulent charges, but changing the number with all the online vendors that have it will be a royal pain. My drugstore loyalty cards are gone, too, but I have keychain backups for those.
It was good to see old friends, online friends, and interesting people to chat with in various venues.
Felina DeVille was a big hit. I knew it was going to go over well when I got a huge laugh as soon as I walked on stage. I won three awards:
1) A Workmanship award for Best Use of Materials. The workmanship judge was particularly taken with the fact that everything was cats, right down to my socks and "calico" shoes (black/white/orange Keds).
2) A Presentation award for Most Humorous. That was the effect I was going for, so I'm quite pleased.
3) A special award from the New York/New Jersey Costumers Guild, aka, The Sick Pups, for being Sick and Twisted. This award is rarely presented and highly coveted. I am deeply honored.
A lot of people made a point of telling me how much they liked the costume, too. But I think my favorite reaction was before the Masquerade, when I was sitting in the hallway outside the Green Room. A woman passing through stopped to say, "I know there's more than one way to skin a cat, but did you have to prove it?" ("Yep.")
The Art Show was also a success for me. I brought nine pieces and sold six: both quilts (Cat Wizard and Hallow Kitty), two of the three mayhapses (gray striped and olive), the Andorian bear, and the black cat. The only ones that didn't sell were the bar-code monkey, the raspberry mayhaps, and Teddy Garcia.
The dealers room was small, and missing some people I usually look for. The only things I bought were some books that I was going to get anyway, and an unconscionable amount of fudge.
My panels went well. I was busy enough that I didn't make it to much other programming, but I did attend Tamora Pierce's guest of honor speech on Saturday, a how-to-make wings demo this afternoon, and the hands-on knitting thing. It's been almost forty years since I held knitting needles, but it came back to me pretty quickly. I now have a pouch for my cell-phone--not that I needed one.
All in all, a good con.
