Since I already have fusible web on hand, I tried bonding the crushed velvet to muslin to stiffen it. It worked--almost too well. It's a lot stiffer than it would be with actual fusible interfacing.
I'm using the velvet for two different parts of the project. The first bit works with the bonded-to-muslin version, but the rest won't. Fortunately, those parts can go on last (or next-to-last), so I should have time to order interfacing. If it doesn't arrive by the end of next week, I'll have to make another trip to the fabric store after all.
On a different note, trimming the tips off of a whole animal's worth of fur fabric produces a monumental amount of Fluff.
