Vegetarianism

Ethically speaking, I really want to go vegetarian. I hardly ever eat meat - maybe once a week - and I think I want to commit to give it up permanently. Not because I think eating meat is instrinsically wrong, but because I think the meat industry in the UK is pretty horrific. Animal abuse aside, it's a huge drain on the environment and contributor to global food shortages. Oh and I'm poor, to boot. Anyone know good veggie communities/resources round here to keep me accountable? My main problems are eating out when I'm craving protein and visiting my mum who tends to cook things like beef stew, curries, sausages and mash (yum...no, bad me!). Also I tend to get iron deficient but I'm taking a supplement for that now (big difference in energy levels, btw).
Don't think I'm ready to give up fish. Almost afraid to read up on the fishing industry for fear it will be as bad as the meat.
Also still must buy meat for the cat. I can live healthily without it, he can't.
