for me season 5 was the high point. I still love it, and hold out hope that it will build to another crescendo of awesomeness, but it hasn't happened yet

I've recently updated both the Sam/Dean and the Castiel rec pages on my recommendation site and clearly Castiel's appearance made it possible for SPN's fan fiction to resist being ruined by the unwise direction of canon.

The split between Sam and Dean in canon screwed up Sam/Dean fanfiction so profoundly that many of the fandom's best and most prolific authors stopped writing and watching SPN.

yeah, i do see what you mean about that...but the fact that their fic still exists kind of feeds back into my perception of Sam and Dean and affects how i interpret the show, if that makes sense. my big bang this year is Sam/Dean, and whilst I would never compare myself to say, Fleshflutter or Candle Beck, it's one of my better things. I got the inspiration mostly from other (older) fanfic.
