I) Snape deserved a decent post mortem after the death scene reduced him to a shell of his former self (how am I supposed to believe that Snape allowed himself to die like that without a single one of the witty ironic barbs we come to know and love?)
II) That being said, though, our glimpse at these memories makes it obvious that our beloved Half-Blood Prince is REALLY dead (instead of, say, playing dead after swallowing a bezoar; THAT would be true Snape!)
III) What exactly did Snape know about Slytherin prior to arrival at Hogwarts? He clearly can't have imagined it as a pureblood haven; that's for sure!
IV) Now we know that James Potter's mother was not a Gryffindor (otherwise he would have said 'like my parents' rather than 'like my dad'); clearly his mom must have been a witch in order for him to be the pureblood we know he is. Therefore, it seems apparent that Harry's paternal grandfather was probably a Slytherin (how else could James have *such* loathing against that house before arrival?)

Granted, I subscribe to the theory that Harry's paternial grandparents were named Charlus Potter and Dorea Black... which would also explain why James and Sirius (both related to the Blacks and with some Slytherin ancestry, despite both being such obvious Gryffindors) got on so well!

V) If Snape hated Petunia as much as Harry did (seemingly more than he hated Harry), why didn't he help Harry play pranks on Petunia (in secret, of course)? That would have been totally awesome - but if JKR had done it, of course, that would have revealed too much too early...

You mean grandmother right? Harry's grandfather (James's dad) was a Gryffindor. Since I saw the Black family tree, I figured that they were Harry's grandparents. It's kind of cool that James and Sirius were actually that closely related.

That's what I meant too; I obviously wasn't thinking there.

However, it seems we agree on the conjectured identity of Harry's grandparents: a Gryffindor on the Black family tree, a Slytherin Black, and two Muggles!

Ironic that Snape died in the Shrieking Shack, the same place where James saved him from getting killed in before. I thought that was an interesting touch.

II) I know people like to muse that Snape could have planned to carry some antidote to a snake bite, but my impression was that he died from the blood loss rather than poison (plus Nagini is not your typical snake, heh). Thoughts?
