After work on the 3rd I went to my first Kajukenbo lesson. It was interesting to say the least. We started off with meditation, then did some stretching, and finally some basic moves. I did everything as the teacher showed us until we practiced the fall and roll move.
Basically you go on your back, come back up by rolling to the one of your sides, using your hand as leverage to push yourself up. We did one from a sitting position and one from a standing position. The sitting position went fine but the standing one was really hard. You have to put your weight on one leg while the other is positioned a bit behind.
I didn't discover until I was at Fuyu's place on the 4th that I am left leg dominate. In class I was trying the move with my right leg, hence why I was off balance. I'm going to try to strengthen my right leg so that isn't a problem in the future. Though I will be using my left leg for now in order to master the move :)
Speaking of the 4th, I spent this year with Fuyu. For the past 7 years, I've done the fireworks show in Quartermaster Harbor near Vashon Island with my boss D. This year I couldn't miss any work and I have classes on either side so I had to bow out. Unfortunately watching other fireworks shows is kind of a letdown now that I've been exposed to larger fireworks. For example, we went down to the waterfront in Des Moines to watch their show. The show only had fireworks sized (in inches): 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10. Most the show was roman candles and fountains (ie 1.5 & 3" shells). Now compare that to my usual fireworks show with these sizes: 1.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16. As you can see the shells are considerably bigger in the latter show. Plus we have more of the big ones in general. The Des Moines show had maybe 10 of the 8" shells, while we would have had around 20-25.
I just happen to glance at a map of Puget Sound and realized that the larger show going on to the right of the Des Moines one in the distance was the Quartermaster Harbor show. I'll have to tell my boss' husband G that I saw the show from a distance. That also explains why there were 16" shells in that show. That is one of the few shows that has shells that big. Not even the two Seattle shows have shells that big. Their biggest is 12" :)
I also watched two movies at Fuyu's place: V for Vendetta and Corpse Bride. Both were pretty good. Though not something I'd want to watch over and over. V for Vendetta is just a modern day retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo story. It made me giggle more when I saw Stephen Fry. His book Revenge is, for the most part, an adaption of the same story. Though it took me a while to figure out who the voice of V was. I feel ashamed considering I've heard his voice many times in the past. Oops.
