This is hilarious. Whenever I type in "support" in the search bar, Lucia and Bastian's support is the first one that pops up.
Manna. You were right. I am such a fanboy.
Note. If there are brackets within the line itself, that's the position of the actual term. These translations are, as usual, personal interpretations. I usually strike a balance between formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence.
Let's first look at the English one.
Lucia: Count Bastian! Where are you?!
Bastian: Lady Lucia... It's not like you to be looking for me. Or even acknowledge my existence, for that matter! Ta ha ha!
Lucia: How badly are you hurt? Do I need to tie a tourniquet?
Bastian: A tourniquet? Ta ha ha, aha! No, my dear. I'm not injured. Unless you include the heart which you have so eagerly stomped!
Lucia: You aren't hurt? Really? I heard a funny-looking man with a mustache suffered a severe injury. Naturally, I assumed it was you. But I see that wasn't the case.
Bastian: Lady Lucia! You were so concerned with my welfare that you rushed to my aid! Ah! You are a true delight! A magestic--
Lucia: That isn't the case at all.
Bastian: There's no use in fighting your feelings! I have already given in to the bottomless pit that is my love for you!
Lucia: Did you not hear me? I already told you how I felt.
Bastian: The more you try to hide it, the more your true feelings show through! You cannot fight true romance any more than you can fight the tides, milady.
Lucia: Arrrggg... Count! Will you please listen to me?!
Lucia: A lot less lovey-dovey, and a lot more frustrated. Bastian: A LOT more psychotic. While psychotic Shakespeare Bastian isn't THAT bad, it's a little different than their J/C supports, respectively. It's got the right idea, sort of. Kind of.
Anyways, below is attached the C script, for those of you who are interested.
L: Count UlyssesBastian! Wh, where are you?!
(Totally different tone. The repetition of "you" [Chinese/Japanese syntax works slightly different than our English ones, as previously mentioned. Lucia's sounding a little panicked at this point.)
B: If it isn't Lady Lucia.....Such panic, this isn't like you [isn't like your usual demeanor].
(Instead of going about and giving us all that extra stuff in the E-script, Bastian cuts straight to the point. He also sounds rather ... surprised. XD)
L: Your w-wound? Are you alright!?
(This part is ridiculously difficult to translate, since Lucia's freaking out even more in the J-script than the C-script. The Japanese script is basically Lucia stuttering one word: "are you hurt?" Pretty everything there is used for emphasis.
Fanboys like me squee in glee and finds this to be riduculously cute, of course.)
B: Dear me! I don't think there's anything wrong with me[my body]?
[は て is used to exhibit surprise and "Dear me!" sounds like something he'd say. 我輩 is an arachic term for I. Carries a sense of nobility/arrogance/whatever you want to call it. Either way, Bastian's probably going O_Ob while being a little confused. Was there something supposed to wrong with him?
L: ....Is that so....I heard a small-moustached clown was seriously injuried...looks like...it's not .....you...[You are certain...it was not ... you?]
[So many pauses...n_______n Either way, there's a lot of ways to read it. I personally see it as a sign that she shows great amounts of concern for our lovable Shakesperian-sprouting overleveled and understated wind sage - be it love, or otherside. She is evidently relieved.]
B: Lady Ludia, to show such worry for me....such panic in your face*[even panicking as such]. I find your behavior very cute.
[*something I've added for effect. The "even panicking as such" is probably a closer interpretation though. The meaning's pretty clear, though. Anyways, now, Bastian understands. A bemused look appears on his face as he probably smiled a bit and started to prance about.]
L:え!?
L: Eeh?! No, no....
[If this was an anime, here would probably be an appropriate time to start playing her theme music. (A soft remix, perhaps). Cue the stammering, and the EXTREMELY obvious blush. SO CUTE.]
B: There is no need [useless] for you [my lady] to hide your feelings any longer. I understand.*
[Bastian may be arachiac and rather dramatic in speech, but he is ...
* I have trouble understanding this particular line - so "I understand" is simply the Chinese text instead of an integrated translation. The last bit could feasibly be "only if you stopped your feelings?" I.E. a repetition of the previous comment?
Either way, this is still pretty obvious. In the C-script, he's obliquely commenting on her own feelings, but respectfully backs off with the simple phrase of "您的心情,吾辈都能体会" (C translation is: There is no longer any need for you to purposefully hide it. Your feelings, I [totally] understand.)]
L: I already said it's not like that didn't I?
[Er, actually, poor Lucia-dono. No she didn't. n__n not in this conversation. This made me chuckle because it's just ... it's pretty clear she cares about him, but she's still denying it. I think personally, it was a case of taking Bastian's words wrong. J/C-Bastian isn't really hellbent on speaking of love - merely hinting about it. I think it's more sensible to read the line as Bastian speaking of the concern she has for him, which is a different type of love than romantic love.
Have I mentioned that it was cute? Like a basket of kittens?]
B: Love. The more you try to sketch it out, the darker and muddier it gets. Such is the nature of love~
[Ok. Now we know Bastian's just messing with her at this point. The above line is once again, straight from the C script. I'm not familiar with Japanese idioms well enough to know what the first line says.]
L: Mrmph! [Sound of frustration] Let me finish! [Hear my story!]
To me, this B support really represents a different stage in their relation. Bastian's doing what any old-fashion, chivalrious man would do: waiting. Being patient, backing off when necessary but always, persistently pursuing his one true love. The critical difference: Bastian is serious. Really, ridiculously serious, unlike his English localization. Meanwhile, Lucia has gotten past the initial fear of simply being used and started to show genuine concern for this ...man....who just enjoys pushing her buttons. Not that they weren't especially close before...especially since they've been in the queen's service together for pretty much most of their life. This point seems to make sense, since Geoffrey and Bastian were also close friends - they were meant to have a support in PoR, but it got cut.
Grrr. Now I'll NEVER know how Geoffrey canonically see Bastian's relationship with his sister....
Anyways, a few other notes.
It is canonical that Elincia, Geoffrey, and Lucia were raised on the Fayre estate, and not Delbray, for some strange reason. This point may be contended, but we know at some point Bastian was involved with the Court and then remained in service since then. In Beneath Azure Skies, I simply have it as such: Delbray is a border province, and Castle Delbray isn't the safest place for the then-Princess Elincia to be living. It seems logical for Count Delbray (Lucia's father, now dead. ):) to have the children tucked away somewhere safe...
Anyways, we shall have to see how the A support goes, neh? See you next time.
P.S. Lucia-dono. *faints* Too cute.
