I lost my post again, due to the back button. I need to stop accidentally hitting backspace.
Also! A question to the (few) readers of this journal. What would be the best way for me to organize this stuff? Generate a list of tags or make the tag cloud bigger? Somehow writing an actual menu for all the references and whatnots?
Is the page itself too dark? Should I perhaps switch to a parchment-like color?
Anyways, taken directly from the J-game, crossreferenced with the C-script.
L: Beorc, laguz...A friendship without differences, one that surpasses both nationality and race...Peace. That is Crimea's true wish.
[Lucia's tone is very lighthearted here. It's fairly clear that she and Januff are close enough to discuss matters that would make others uncomfortable - the issue of race.]
J: ..Surpassing...race, mm? Crimea's changed. Has it allowed laguz to live within its borders?
[Januff is still skeptical.]
L: Mhm! It's all due to the alliance formed with King Cainghesomething[Skirmir's NON-idiot uncle.] Princess Elincia believes that this is the correct path to take [right way to go], not only Gailia, but also the other laguz nations as well.
J: Sounds great on paper. But, such friendship you are speaking of...is it that easy?
L: ...What do you mean?
[Oh, Lucia. You innocent little angel....]
J: An example. We Phoenicians and our conflict with Begnion. You know, right?
L: ...Yes.
J: Even though the Divine Emissary [Note: this is the J/C name for the Apostle. 神使 = literally "divine" "messenger/emissary."]'s apology has been accepted, do you think it'll be easy for the rest of the country to accept it? What if, during a time, for whatever reason, another conflict erupts. War is unpreventable. If that happened, which side would you stand on?
L: Ah....
J: Begnion, right? To us Phoenicians, Crimea is still a part of Begnion [Lit. translation: a slave to Begnion]. Crimea is a vassal state, and has no say in politics such as these. If that's the case, then ... we could only meet on the battlefield.
[Woah woah woah Januff. Didn't know you were such a cynic underneath the cheeriness...]
L: ....Princess Elincia will never wish for such a thing to happen. She'll do everything she can to avoid such a conflict. However...I am but her servant. Should it come to that point, where fighting is necessary....I will have no qualms to lift my blade. [Lit. have no confusion.]
J: I as well. My king's side is my side. My king's enemy is my enemy. But...if at all possible, I'd rather not fight you. You're such a good [* this is important. See note below] girl....Compared to fighting, I'd much rather drink and talk with you.
[Isn't this cute, though? Honor and Duty before personal feelings? ]
* The lols of Januff being something of an alcoholic aside, this is important. In the English localization, the text is merely "good-looking," as referenced below. In the J-script, it's "good," a qualitative (trait) description, since the とは is loosely something along the lines of -ness and いないい as a whole is good, wholesome, nice, which denotes a character rather than a physical trait. The C script is even simpler. It uses the blanketing 好, which is more or less just ....good, again. Instead of simply "good-looking."
L: Mm...I feel the same. Once this battle is over, and Crimea restored...let us meet again. Not as enemies, but as friends.
J: Promise me, then, that you'll be able to drink with me? Do I have your word?
[I can SERIOUSLY picture Januff and Bastian trying to get Lucia drunk now. Seriously!]
L: Ha...ha ha! *Sigh.* Yes.....of course....
[は……はあ……………… The C-script has her simply ending on a laugh. The J-script has the sighing and agreeing.]
My personal theory: Lucia can't drink worth a [censored]. (There is another place where I distinctly seemed to recall that she drank. So she HAVE had alcohol before, with probably some funny results.
Anyways, the banter between the two sounds suspiciously like the localization of Princess Bride.
J: You seem like a good woman. I hate to kill you.
L: You seem like a good laguz. I hate to die.
FANART SQUEE TIME~
Contrast:
Lucia: In Crimea, we dream of peace for all people. Friendship that transcends nation, creed, and race. Beorc and laguz, living in harmony.
Janaff: Transcending race, huh? Crimea is an odd country. I heard you even let laguz live within your borders!
Lucia: Yes, due to our bond with King Caineghis. And now, Princess Elincia hopes to establish such alliances with other laguz nations.
Janaff: It's a pretty thought. But do you think that a friendship which transcends nation, creed, and race will come so easily?
Lucia: It will not be easy, but it can be--
Janaff: For example. You know that Phoenicis and Begnion used to be bitter enemies, right?
Lucia: Yes, I know.
Janaff: The apostle finally recognized the Serenes massacre, but who knows how long it'll take that news to spread over the country? Before that happens, there could be more fighting. War might erupt anew. If so, whose side will you choose?
Lucia: I would--
Janaff: It'll be Begnion. Come on! Am I wrong? And in the eyes of Phoenicis, Crimea is nothing more than a Begnion colony. Which means I'll fight against you.
Lucia: Princess Elincia would do everything in her power to avoid such a war. However, I am her loyal vassal. In the event of conflict, my path is clear.
Janaff: Same here. The king's ally is my ally. And the king's enemy... But if I can help it, I'd rather not fight a good-looking woman like you! Dinner would be much more enjoyable.
Lucia: I agree, Janaff. When this war is over and Crimea rebuilt...let's meet again. Not as enemies, but as friends.
Janaff: I hope you'll be old enough to go out without a chaperon by then!
Lucia: I hope so as well.
We're missing a lot of emotions and feelings in these translations. The tone is (IMHO) needlessly formal, and they cut out Januff's alcoholic tendencies....
Also, Lucia's "In Crimea" sounds like a Soviet Russia joke.
