Good, thorough discussion. I will argue with one point, though, as I did in my reply to the post you're commenting on: A quick Google for ".223 deer hunting" bears out my contention that the round is generally considered too small for ethically hunting deer. While it will kill with one shot if properly placed, most deer hunters consider anything smaller than .30 caliber to be too small to make the likelihood of a one shot kill high enough.
I admit, my opinion of a "good deer round" is a bit colored by having been poring over Bruce's issues of Precision Shooting magazine, where everyone seems to be all about the small-bore, blazingly-fast tack-drivers with precision placement.
In my area, of course, it's a moot point; Michigan prohibits hunting with anything but shotguns south of about Mount Pleasant...
