The smoke alarm in the garage has been beeping and chirping and yelling at us for a month or so now. I ran into one of the contractors in our development the other day and asked what to do about it, and he said to replace the 9-volt battery backup (the alarms are hardwired). And I felt kinda stupid for asking. So tonight (it takes me a while to get around to doing things sometimes) I went out into the garage and dismantled the thing. There was nowhere to put a 9-volt battery, and the chirping continued even though I was holding the thing in my hand and all wires were disconnected. I brought the alarm inside the house, and the garage continued to beep and chirp. Then it occurred to me that perhaps the thing I had taken apart was not in fact a smoke alarm. Turns out it was the doorbell transformer. So I reinstalled it, and the doorbell works again but the garage continued to chirp. After tearing apart the garage for 20 minutes I discovered that we don't have a smoke alarm in the garage. But I did find a battery operated smoke detector that never got installed in our previous house buried in the bottom of a stack of boxes with a nearly dead battery, chirping wildly. Bloody hell. And I felt kinda stupid again.
Does anybody want a now slightly damaged battery operated smoke detector...?
