Anyone who has even glanced at my eljay knows that I am a shameless, shameless evangelist for the Great Lakes Myth Society &mdash the best band you've never heard of (or heard of only from me).
The GLMS's self-titled 2005 debut album was a revelation, a genre-defying masterpiece. (All Music Guide called it "an album that tantalizingly hangs in a place just out of time and fashion. [...] A spellbinding, fascinating album, one that sounds like little else in the past or present.") GLMS straddles a line between folk, indie, and rock, and their sound is defined by beautiful songwriting, soaring guitars, impassioned lyricism, and creative instrumentation (really, who knew that what modern music needed was more accordion, banjo, and fiddle?). I like a lot of bands and I love a lot of albums, but Great Lakes Myth Society is the one disc I own that I can enjoy at any time, in any mood.
So why am I going on and on about GLMS again? Because, oh, joyous news! The GLMS's second album, titled Compass Rose Bouquet, will hit store shelves on 12 June.
In the meantime, pick up Great Lakes Myth Society for less than $8 on Amazon (or, if you must, I will even allow you to purchase it on iTunes, even though under normal circumstances that would make you an iSheep). And head over to
the GLMS MySpace page to preview tracks from the upcoming album.
