Samuel's been down with a virus for a couple of days. So life over here has been mainly sitting on the couch with a sick toddler who just wants to be cuddled. He's a bit better now, although he's not yet back to his old cheerful, active, talky-talk self.
January 31 is the deadline for early applications to the Clarion workshop in San Diego. I'm waffling between sending off the same stories I sent to Clarion West or sending my experimental Passion of Saint Criscelda where all the guys the readers empathize with just get killed. The Passion is rather bloody, it doesn't end well (except for one character), but after going through it and doing final edits, I realized I like it the way it is. I mean, shit happens. People die, and when resurrected spirits go berserk, the killing isn't logical, it's random. Dienan is just lucky he survives. Of course, there's a lot of backstory as to why the spirits went berserk. Sin Agpoy had a huge headache, was enjoying himself in the underworld, and poof...he gets summoned away from his rest... I would be pissed too. Plus, the regent is a real pain. But all that is in another story. After edits, The Passion came in under 4k. Which makes me really happy. Oh and I sent it out to market too. Actually, all my application stories are out to market, I don't get to write as much as I want to, so everyone of those babies has got to work really hard to justify their existence.
Anyway, my choice now lies between sending Alternate Girl's Expatriate Life (my alt-android, alt-whatever experiment), Harinuo's Love Song (another experiment combining Mangyan ambahan with Ifugao culture), and The Passion of Saint Criscelda which is my experimental stand-alone short. The Passion of Saint Criscelda was written after an evening of listening to Bach's Matteus Passion. Yeah, I know...I had gruesome images in my head while the music was going on. It's one of the funnest pieces I've written, although my characters didn't have any fun.
Oh and a warm welcome to fellow filipino specficcer,
banzai_cat . He claims he isn't here...but I'm sure that with a little help, he'll materialize and start posting or crossposting or whatever it is you do when you have a blog at blogspot and another over here. (Yes, I have a blogspot blog too, but it's woefully neglected.)
I'm off to work on my next review. It's a lot of reading, and I've only gotten through five stories. Yikes.
