My all-time favorite series is "The Chronicles of Amber" by Roger Zelzany. This was the first fantasy series that I remember reading - even before Tolkien. I found it in my high school library when I was wandering the stacks before school. I loved the characters, the abilities of the princes, the worlds ... hence my running of the GURPS World-Walkers' campaign.
My current favorite series is "The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher. I initially became interested in this because the SciFi channel is starting a series in January 2007 based upon the series. You have to love a book series set in the present day with a main character who is "the only wizard listed in the Chicago phone book." Funny. Entertaining. The world is building and getting more interesting with each new book.
My second current favorite series is "The Nightside" by Simon Green. This one is set in a secret London where magic, gods, ... are real. The main character is a PI who has the ability to find anything, anyone when he opens his hidden, third eye. Unfortunately, this draws the bad guys to him. This one is also funny; although, a darker humor. This is one of the inspirations for the Endless Building in my World-Walkers' campaign.
