Wahh, I'm so envious of nice!and!spacious!(mainly to say square)!tech!rooms! Just not fair, is it, living in hobbit-land. :( And loudspeakers! I wish we had loud speakers in the middle of classes...:/ I didn't really imagine cutting out boards so...*normally* though. Mind you< I've never actually seen the building of a viola from scratch, so, I wouldn't really know.

Ohh- what type of polish?

ROTFL, really, the shop I usually work in is an absolute sty. I mean... every time I go there I have to spend at least fifteen minutes trying to clear off a spot to work, and then I have to try and find my stuff... right now I'm actually carving the convex side, and I just bring my own chisel, hammer and c-clamp because I know it'll take me ages to find it in there. Plus, supervisors are generally doing their own thing, they can't watch me the whole time and help me find stuff. The school shop is tidy and pretty, but I was only there once. I can't say that I prefer it, though, it's... not as homey. *likes messy places ( ... )

...varnish doesn't effect sound quality. :P Varnish is primarily to protect the wood from moisture etc. Beyond that, it's just vanity. So really you need to have varnish, but there's no reason to choose one color varnish or another, that's all just vanity. It's not like some colors have speshul protection powers or anything and others don't.

*hugs* Hopefully headache will go away? (I haven't been feeling too well myself, to be honest.)

Geh. Heard random people saying stuff about the special-ness of varnish, and how different makers have different recipes and are all, omg-secret about them.

I'm probably wrong though. :/

There's... slight differences. Nothing all that appreciable, from a sound quality standpoint, though. (This is the impression the Strobel book gave me, plus brief conversations with folks. I haven't given that much thought to it yet, though...)
