Rookie Blue - 4.09 Thoughts

Thoughts on 4.09 and Andy's "growth" this season:
[Spoiler (click to open)]Really needed to get this off my chest after watching 4.09 (did anyone else feel like hurling after the Ick/Andy scene at the end of the episode?). This season of Rookie Blue started with so much potential. We all knew about Sam’s new love interest, Marlo, from the promo Global released. No surprise there - Andy did leave to go UC without a word to Sam. He thought she meant it was over by leaving, so he moved on. Fine. I don’t like it, but I understand his reasoning.

I thought the beginning of S4 showed a lot of PERSONAL growth in Andy. She seemed much more confident and actually stop up for herself when people tried to bowl her over with their opinions (cough Marlo cough). She even had the guts to stand up to Sam when he was treating her like a “personal punching bag” in 4.06. I applauded her for that. Thank you Andy for finally growing a backbone.

However, these past few episodes I haven’t seen any growth in Andy whatsoever. I’ve felt that she’s become very stagnant. And I feel like she’s living two lives. One in which she’s friends with Traci/Gail/Dov/Chris and one in which she’s Nick’s BFF and “breakup buddy.”

For me, the Ick/Andy “relationship” has no substance. They are great friends and like to laught and have fun, but when it comes down to it, is that really enough to sustain a relationship. Andy hasn’t seemed like she’s really been taking him seriously at all until recently. She’s always making jokes at his expense. And they actually don’t work well together. AT ALL. They’re always bungling a case or coming up empty.

Thoughts on Andy's RELATIONSHIP growth:
To me, Andy is still stuck in her “all about me” phase which is why she and Sam never worked in the first place (yes Sam had a heavy, heavy hand in the demise of their relationship, but
they BOTH had a lot they needed to work on. Neither trusted each other with their heart. They were always keeping something hidden.
  • “If things go south, and I really don’t want them to, but if they do, promise you won’t give up without a fight.” Keyword  is YOU (meaning Sam). What about you Andy?? You still run when things get hard.
  • Andy didn’t want to be “that girl” so she left to focus on her career even though Sam poured his heart out.
  • Andy is worried about what others will think about her and Nick if they get together (why don’t you think about how your actions will affect others for once - like GAIL).
It really frustrated me that neither Sam nor Andy was willing to talk and communicate. That’s the point of this season, so the writers say. Adapt or die.

Tonight just showed me that Andy is still only capable of thinking about herself in the end. She knew sleeping with Nick was a really bad choice because of her friendship with Gail. But she did it anyway. I personally won’t see growth in Andy until she realizes that her actions have consequences (sleeping with Nick and betraying Gail, not forgiving Sam but expecting him to wait). I don’t like the person that Andy has become. GIRL CODE trumps all. You don’t hurt a friend like that.

I am expecting some major revelations in the last for episodes of this season, otherwise it will be a complete wash. If Andy continues on her path, she’s only going to alienate the people who care the most about her. Living a life alone without those around who you care about is not a life. It’s existing, but there’s nothing meaningful to it. Just ask Sam. He’s functioning in his “relationship” with Marlo, but there’s no substance.

Will Nick be enough to sustain Andy when everyone deserts her? I don’t think so and it’s certainly not something I want to see happen. I want Andy and Sam to grow so they can learn to be together and actually communicate in their future relationship. The reason I am so passionate about this show IS because of the McSwarek dynamic. For me, no other coupling even comes close to matching it.

Without that change in Andy, she will just be another girl standing alone, crying in the rain once again. Yet this time, no one will care because she’s become a person we don’t like.

Please Tassie and co. FIX THIS!!
