Is it just me or is each episode getting better and better as the season progresses?
LOVED, LOVED this episode. It’s so wonderful to have that S1 and S2 vibe back again with the witty banter, focus on solving cases and occasional flirting. This season of Rookie Blue is going to be the best yet.
The episode opened with Andy and Duncan bringing a criminal into booking. Andy really needed to use the restroom and Duncan told her to go ahead; he would be “fine.” Andy is obviously reluctant to leave him alone and tells him “not to move a muscle.” He follows her orders to a T because when two suspects start beating each other up and he doesn’t even try to break them apart; in fact he seems quite amused by the debacle. This reminded me of Gail in 1.01 when Noelle told her not to move as well. However, that was Gail’s first day on the job. Duncan is now into his fifth week. I seriously don’t think he’s cut out for this job.
Andy insists to Traci that she and Sam “agreed that they’re just friends.” Her pro and con list regarding Sam does not look good in his favor, but her heart and gut tell her otherwise. This “just friends” theme is carried over into a scene between Sam and Andy in the break room. He brings her coffee, she offers him half her bagel and they flirt and joke about rookies falling for their training officers. Hello flirty banter!! I’ve missed you so much. They are obviously interested in being more than friends, but I really appreciate them taking time instead of just rushing into a relationship (and into bed). They need to communicate first before the sexy times follow.
Meanwhile, Dov is definitely reluctant to become physical with Chloe again after her injury. She died for two minutes! He doesn’t want to rush her progress, but Chloe is certainly worried that Dov doesn’t find her attractive anymore and enlists Nick’s help to discover the truth. Cue super awkward convos between Nick/Chloe and Nick/Dov. But it was nice of him to help a girl out. And as cute as Dov and Chloe are together I really love Nick and Chloe. I definitely wouldn’t mind them as a couple.
Side note: We’re four episodes in S5 and we still haven’t learned anything more about Nick and his past. I thought 5.03 was perfect to mention something, anything… but we got nothing. Why was Nick the perfect guy to train Duncan for Fite Nite? Does he have a boxing background? Did he fight in the service? But nope, he still remains a mystery.
Poor Gail. I’ve always loved her as a character, but she’s really been put through the ringer these past few seasons. I’m not really interested in her relationship with Holly at all, but if it makes her happy then cool. I think this episode with Sophie and her mom is truly Gail’s undoing. But hopefully she will confide in someone (perhaps Holly) who will help her through the dark times ahead. I just want her whole.
Chris!! WTF dude!! He is spiraling and obviously has a drug addiction. I’m actually quite interested to see how this plays out. Although I was hoping for a happier Chris in S5 after the drama of S4 that is clearly not the case.
Duncan is literally the worst cop I’ve ever seen. He has the worst instincts and the worst people-skills imaginable. I cringed just watching him interact with a child and seeing him holding the grape juice hostage until the kid told him what he wanted to hear. And then he failed to back Andy up, to be her partner, in a life and death situation. It certainly looked like he was having an anxiety attack, which is sudden and hard to control. But I also think he is a coward in general and should not be doing this job. Someone will die because he fails to act.
The end scene. Oh. My. Goodness. It was everything. Andy was obviously having a terrible day after having to make the decision that Duncan isn’t fit to be a cop. She felt like his failure was her failure and she needed Sam to reassure her. He certainly stepped up.
“You’re one of the best I’ve ever seen. I think you’re feeling that way because you believe in people and you think they can be better. It’s what makes you who you are.”
Slow clap for Sam Swarek. Sam knows her better than anyone. He could have told her exactly what she told him she wanted, that it wasn’t her fault. But he went deeper. He went to the core of who she is because he knows her. That was the moment when Andy realized that “just friends” isn’t who they are, nor is it what she wants. When she leaned in for that kiss I was screaming in joy. FINALLY! 700 days since they last kissed and it was perfection.
I’m so looking forward to them moving on together and their continued communication. Andy is obviously in for a very rough time coming up since Duncan brought lawyers in to discount Andy’s claims. I think Sam is going to be there for her in every way that matters. And that, folks, is what true love is.
