loves iTunes more than she ever has ever

oh heavens
I just realized my subject is in facebook status form.

ANYWAY here is an email conversation I had with iTunes that explains the sob story and joyous ending that has prompted this-

FROM ME throught their website, after I filled out the form and hit "missing purchased music" and all.

-----
[list of about 20 or so songs]
I am also missing other songs, but because all 42 missing purchases would be too much for me to write and find the order numbers for, I figure these purchases that I care most about should suffice for now. I apologize in advance for any human error in copying the purchase codes...because the purchase history does not have a copy/paste function, I had to do it by hand.

Now, to explain WHY I'm missing so much music!

Recently, my computer started to die. Our family is very active about backing up all our files, including our music. While my computer was still struggling to live, my dad tested several times to make sure all my music, especially the purchased songs, were backed up, and they appeared to be.

However, when he finally rebuilt the computer, we discovered this to be far from the case. Many of our older songs (including almost all iTunes purchases from 2005-2008, with a few bizarre exceptions which I have detailed above) were safe and had back-up files, but for some reason, the songs purchased in 2009 were not backed up safely as they had been when we tested.

Additionally, I had many songs on my iPod, including quite a few purchased songs from 2009 that I otherwise would have lost. These songs, as you should know, transferred well when I asked iTunes to transfer them. However, my iPod is a 2GB classic nano, so I do not have enough space to hold all my music and it cannot hold any videos. I therefore lost ALL my purchased videos (with one exception from 2007) and all the songs I listed above. Since my computer started to die rather unexpectedly, I did not have time to sync my iPod to my iTunes, and therefore lost a lot of songs I particularly love and bought VERY recently, because they were not backed up like we had tested and they were not on my iPod.

I have read and understand iTune's position on replacing lost songs. However, I have been a very loyal customer for years and sincerly enjoy all the songs I have purchased through iTunes. This entire process of rebuilding my computer, reinstalling all my programs, etc is very draining and stressful. I'm especially upset that I've lost all my playlists, but understand there isn't a way to restore these now that they're gone.

Considering the massive amount of lost songs and the equally massive amount of money I have put into these songs and now lost, (especially since some are no more than a week old) I would extremely appreciate any help iTunes can offer with this situation. I recieved many of these songs through free music Tuesdays (which has to be one of my favorite parts of the week, by the way) and do not have the financial means to replace all 29 purchases. ANY help at all would be EXTREMELY appreciated, and will certainly reinstate my faith in iTunes.

Please feel free to consult my purchase history to verify these purchases.

Thank you,
[Razzi]

Now, at this point, I was still very, very distressed. I thought for sure the best response I could ever possibly get would be 20 song credits. And that was even iffy, as their policy clearly states they don't reissue downloads for free. AND most of my missing songs were free songs or videos.

This is the email I recieved back (it's been more than the promised 24 hours, but I'm okay with that considering the situation...)

Hi [Razzi],

My name is Jennie, I have just finished reading your request and I want to let you know that I am here to help. I understand your computer died unexpectedly and as a result many of your purchased items have been lost. I know it would be disappointing to lose, through no fault of your own, items you have already paid for and accumulated.

[Razzi], I am glad to hear you took the time to read through the iTunes Terms of Sale and we do consider you a valued member of the iTunes family. So, I have good news for you, the iTunes Store Customer Support will let you download (at no charge) all the titles you purchased on this account that are still available. This will not include any item that has been modified or removed from the store since you purchased it. Please note that you may download your purchases only once, so this is an exception. Also note that Apple does not offer protection for the loss of data from your hard disk, so I recommend that you continue to back up your iTunes library.

If you have purchased any ringtones, please note that we are unable to replace those for you because ringtones are created and stored only on your computer's hard disk.

Any movies you may have rented will not be made available for you to download again. If you rented a movie and were unable to finish watching it, please reply to let me know.

Just follow these steps to download the available items:

1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It can be downloaded free of charge from the iTunes website:

http://www.itunes.com/download

2) Open iTunes.

3) From the Store menu at the top, choose Check for Available Downloads.

4) Enter your account name and password, then click Check. Your purchases should begin downloading. If you receive an error message while downloading, try again after turning off any firewall or web-accelerator software that you may have installed.

If you want to pause your downloads and resume later, click Downloads on the left side of iTunes, then click the Pause All button in the lower right corner. When you're ready to resume downloading, just choose "Check for Available Downloads" from the pull-down Store menu at the top, enter your account name and password, then click the Check button.

I do need to mention that I was unable to restore every item in your purchase history. When an item is modified in the iTunes Store, or removed entirely, we no longer have access to the original one that you ordered. This is what I couldn't restore:

[List of a bunch of songs and videos. The best part is that there is only ONE song on this list that I didn't have on a folder saved or my iPod or that I actually still wanted. YAY]

I am happy to hear you and your family keep all of your files backed up so, I have included this article that explains how to create and maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library:

If you have further questions regarding your iTunes account, please don't hesitate to reply to my email.

I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for your loyalty with the iTunes Store. Have a great day [Razzi]!

Sincerely,

Jennie
iTunes Store Customer Support

Please Note: I work Sunday, August 23rd, through Friday, August 28th. Off on Monday.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you. You may receive an AppleCare survey email; any feedback you provide would be greatly appreciated.

If I get that AppleCare survey, she is getting hiiiiigh points. I already emailed them a reply expressing my undying gratitude.

tl;dr- I lost all my music recently. Thought it was gone forever. Corporate giants at Apple are not ALL soulless customer crushers...they gave me every single thing I've dowloaded ever back for free.

I have 244 dowloads left from the original 330+, going right now. C: so much fun.

music, happy, computer
