Maya walked ahead of him and he watched her go, talking with her brother. Spanish. He’d never been amazing at it and he figured what they were mostly speaking was some kind of twin code. At first it amused him, but now it annoyed him.
Alejandro walked off giving Gabriel a dirty look before he went. Gabriel smiled at him just in case his sister might be watching. She wasn’t -being distracted by the map- and so he leered at her and made sure that her brother was watching as he came up behind her a little too close. Her brother almost came back but seemed torn between what he was sent to do and protecting his sister. She waved him on, reassuringly.
“He’s wound a little too tightly.” Gabriel commented
“Que?” Maya said turning against him and was startled. Maybe he was a too close but he liked the proximity.
“Sorry” he said backing up some, hiding a smile. She smiled up at him. But it was different than the other ones she’d given him before. This one was wary and he wasn’t sure if he liked it. “Is something wrong?” he asked with his hand touching her on the shoulder.
“We are all just very tired.” She replied moving discreetly out of his grasp. Not so discreetly that he didn’t notice, though.
“I uh, I see. Maybe we should rest for a while. Where did Alejandro go?”
“He went to run an errand.”
“And he left you alone with El Ojos de Lobos?*”
“I’m sorry about that. I didn’t think you’d understand.”
Well, that’s thoughtful … I’m a very good listener, Maya. You might want to remember that when you and he are having one of your chats.” He saw her smile fall and a bit of color drain from her face. She was caught. And oh how lovely it looked on her.
“I’m sorry, Gabriel.” she said grabbing his hand and holding it in her firm grasp. He made quick work of her guilty gesture and laced their fingers together, pulling her nearer to him.
“Why doesn’t he liked me, Maya? I’m just trying to help you.”
“It’s not his fault. We’re all just tired.” she rested her head against him, he knew because she tough it was what was expected. She didn’t feel at ease in his arms, but she felt nice; he thought as he ran his fingers down her spine. She shivered and he smiled again, mouth all white, glimmering teeth and a huge frightening grin.
