The first time he saw her with a baby he was a little taken aback to say the least. The child was small in her arms and all of Maya's attention was focused on the tiny bundle. She cooed and soothed and touched the dozing infant and he watched them both from a distance, enthralled in the beauty of Woman and Child. She fit so perfectly in that maternal image that it hurt his heart to watch, but he did so with intent. He was so quiet, that it took her a moment to realize he was in the room, but when she did she invited him in to sit with her.
She introduced them, speaking softly.
"Tio Gabriel, this is your niece, Alicia ..."
Alicia's hair was curly-soft on her head and she smelled like baby powder and innocence. Her eyes were closed as she snuggled in Maya's arms.
"She's so sweet." Maya continued. Gabriel nodded his agreement, as he drew one long finger
over the softness of the baby's cheek.
"Would you like to hold her?" Maya asked. He shifted in his seat, both anxious and excited at the same time.
"Could I?"
"Si, of course you can." She smiled at him sliding closer while leaning over to first kiss his mouth. He knew it wasn't all for nothing. She loved her husband and love kissing him, but still Gabriel felt himself relax at the feel of her mouth on his. She moved her tongue softly against his lips and his eyes were still closed when she pulled away from him, a gentle smile on her face.
"Here you go."
He felt the tiny weight of the baby slip into his arms. She wiggled and squirmed against him. And he felt a little lost at the feel of the squirming babe. He looked toward Maya for some kind of guidance, but she leaned backward against the couch, placing a hand on the nape of his neck with a sigh.
"I'm not sure what to do?" and he sounded like it, but her words floated up to him like bubbles in a fish tank; soft and reassuring.
"You're doing just fine, cariño."
He looked back down at the child in his grasp. A look of awe shown through his glasses, behind his eyes. He watched as one tiny, little hand rose to one tiny, little face and rubbed at her closed tiny, little eyelid. She yawned wide and the smallest sound came from her mouth. He moved her into the crook of his elbow, and drew one long finger down her cheek once more. This time he was rewarded with the sweetest toothless smile he'd ever seen. The baby's eye remained closed and he heard his wife giggle.
"Ooh you better not let tu padre see that. She likes her tio Gabriel." Maya whispered next to him. Gabriel gave a bashful smile, just like Maya knew he would, curled his finger and prodded his knuckle to the baby's cheek. Alicia's mouth slanted opened as she turn her head toward his finger. He chuckled at the movement when he did it again and got the same reaction.
"Ay, she's hungry."
"Well, what do I do?" Gabriel asked sounding like it was his fault.
"It's okay, just wait right here and I'll make her a bottle."
"Maya, I can make the bottle. You --"
"No- no you need the practice." She said sounding a little too amused as she scooted away towards the kitchen.
Alicia became a little restless in his embrace. Gabriel adjusted his grip but still she kept squirming against him, angling her mouth toward his body. Her little hands bawled up into tiny fists and she started making the softest, most helpless hiccuping sound that just about shattered his heart into infinite pieces.
"Maya--!" The panic in his voice wasn't helping matters as the babe could feel the tension in his body.
"Just a little while longer." Maya's voice came from the other room. Gabriel looked down at the little brown face as it started to resemble a prune in the way it scrunched up and changed color in her distress. He started to bounce the baby nervously standing to shift his weight from one foot to the next in an effort to calm himself. The hiccup sound was becoming more and more defined as the baby became more agitated.
Gabriel felt lost as he again shifted her against him, resting her to his chest in an up right position. He placed his long fingers against her back and began stoking and panting her curling form. She settled a little and he had a thought; something he read along time ago about newborn babies and ...
He pushed her up further on his chest, supporting her as he brought her closer to his neck. He pressed her flat against him and cradled the crown of her head just under his chin. He took in a deep calming breath and began to hum ever so softly. It worked! Little Alicia settled down. He continued his subtle bouncing movements while rubbed her back until Maya returned with a warm bottle.
"You two look so sweet together." Maya said as she finally relived Gabriel of the baby.
"Don't you get any ideas." He said as he stuffed his hands back into his pockets and watched her sit to feed the baby.
"Me? I won't need ideas with an appetite like yours." She gave him a wink and a sly smile as she settled back into the couch. When she stole a look up at him she saw there was another blush in his cheek.
