"You're late ..." Gabriel says as Maya flies in the front door of his shop.
"I can't talk now, Gabe, I need to use your bathroom!"
Maya rushes past Gabriel in a flash of hair and luminous skin; smelling of sweet spices and warmth. He felt his belly flop and a smile broke over his face.
"Sometimes, I think the only reason you stop by is just so you can use my bathroom."
She dashed towards the back of his shop. And he listened as her bags hit the floor, before pushing open the back door, calling out to him. "That's not true, Gabriel. You are my one and only friend in the whole, wide world. Are you trying to hurt my feelings? God, I have to pee!"
"Close the door!" he yelled after her, feeling his face burn as his mind automatically conjured up shamefully erotic images of Maya in his bathroom.
He heard hear laugh before the door clicked shut behind her. Sometimes she was a little too free for his taste and it made him wonder if growing up in a big family was the cause. He let out a sigh, smoothing his hair down and began to close up. Now that Maya had shown up he knew he wouldn't be able to get much work done. Just as he arranged a delicate piece in a soft cloth to put away for the night, he felt, more than saw, a figure walk past his window. And then, suddenly, his bell rang again.
"Gabriel Grey."
There, in the doorway, stood the owner of a familiar voice that his stomach drop. Jeremy Glass was an old high school classmate of Gabriel's, only they were never close. Jeremy saw Gabriel as weak, because he never defended himself in his younger days. Jeremy was shorter than Gabriel, with short brown army style hair that already showed signs of receding, he looked like a jar head. He wasn't too high up on the popularity scale either, but he fancied himself better than Gabriel. His visits were sparse and as welcomed as a hornets nest.
Gabriel nodded his head. He'd figured out early enough that the less he said the shorter the visits.
"Yeah my mom sent me down here to ask about the --"
"It's not ready yet. I've told Mrs. Glass that it wouldn't be ready until I've received the special order of balance wheels from the --"
"Yeah, well, you know how mothers can be. You still live with yours. right?"
A muscle in Gabriel's jaw clicked and the tendons strained over his knuckles as he felt his hands clench.
"No, I've been on my own for sometime now."
"Still can't get a date, huh? What's the matter, none of the boys will have ya?" he snickered at his own stage whispered joke.
Gabriel let out at soft sigh through his nose and pretended didn't hear the remark; instead he busied himself with closing the shop.
After waiting for the desired reaction, that never came, Jeremy continued. "Yeah, so, Kristen and I are still together." He offered even though Gabriel hadn't asked. "Well, not together-together, but you know, she can't get enough of me! Always calling and -- but I'm keeping my options opened."
Gabriel's mouth thinned unpleasantly and he didn't speak as he turned his back on Jeremy, looking up on a shelf for fish food. "Was there something else you wanted?" He asked with out turning around. "I hate to think you wasted your time coming down here, when you cold have just called about the piece."
"Actually, I'm waiting for someone. I think she just came in here, you might have seen her?"
Gabriel's shoulder stiffened and he lowered his arms to his side. "I'm closing up. There's nobody here --"
Jeremy hadn't noticed the strange tone that crept into the watchmakers voice and so continued on as though nothing happened. "I saw her come in here. Can't miss a body like that," He wolf whistled before he continued. "I'd know it anywhere." Jeremy laughed; Gabriel did not. He felt very hot and full of thick, pounding blood.
"I said I'm closing up!"
"Gabriel, how do you like my... is there a problem?" Maya stepped out from behind the curtain that lead from the back of the shop. For a moment Gabriel forgot about Jeremy. For a moment he forgot about the world. She was dressed in black. The fabric did strange things to him as he watched it seemingly melt over her skin. Like it was holding on for dear life. Dear God he hoped the light wasn't playing tricks on him.
Maya caught sigh of Jeremy and her eyes dulled, mouthing dropping into a soft frown. "Is this a friend of yours?"
"Hey, didn't you hear me calling you outside? You know Gabriel, too?" Jeremy's voice sounded too harsh in as it hung in the air. Maya ignored his question and continued to look at Gabriel, expectantly. Gabriel couldn't help noticing the way her fingertips danced over the fabric covering her thigh. He swallowed hard.
"I thought you were closing up the shop." "He can't do that when there are customers in here." Jeremy inserted. "Where are you going all dressed up like that? I'll take you to where ever you've got to go."
"Excuse me? Do I know you? " Maya's voice clipped coolly in the air. Gabriel could practically hear her rolling her eyes and felt his eyebrows rise in amusement.
"... Maya?"
"Yeah, Maya, that's right! I remember you. You were at that club that night your friend was having a birthday party." Jeremy bounced on his toes expectantly, but Maya regarded him with barely counseled annoyance. "You going to another party? Having Grey, here, fix some jewelry for you?"
Maya narrowed her eyes at Jeremy, then turned back to Gabriel. She moved toward him in a smooth, flowing motion, as the material of her dress rippled over he skin. Jeremy watched her move and continued to ramble on in a attempt to get Maya's attention. "My mom likes to throw some business his way, because she's friends with his mom and feels sorry for the whole family. 'What else can the boy do with such big, dumb hands?'" He imitated his mother, laughing, but it died off quickly when he noticed she didn't join him.
"I can think of a few things actually." She smiled easily, but this was a smile Gabriel hadn't seen before. She moved comfortably behind the counter, as if she spent a great amount of time there, then slid her arms around Gabriel waist. She looked up at him, past his glasses and into his eyes. Gabriel took a started step back, but Maya recovered gracefully by squeezing him tighter in her arms. She stood up on her toes and whispered into his ear.
"I hope I'm not embarrassing you too much, but this guy is a dick. Is it wrong to assume that we both want him outta here?" he shook his head against her, his mouth hanging low against her ear. He thought he imagined her shudder against him, but it must be her outfit. "Then be a dear and play along, will ya?" she winked at him.
It took a some effort but Gabriel stole a deep breath and made himself relax against her, which was a feat in and of its self.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Jeremy said with a croak.
Maya turn around, intentionally brushing against Gabriel, and finally looked toward Jeremy. "You're still here? Why?"
"You're really with him? Gabriel? Gabriel-fucking-Grey?"
"Not that I feel the need to explain myself, but contrary to what your mother might think; Yes, Gabriel could be considered a larger man," She leaned back giving him an appreciative once over, then turned back continuing on, missing his blush. "when compared to someone like you, but I would hardly call him "dumb"... Unless you're mother definition of dumb means "Hung like a horse."
Gabriel brought his hand up to his mouth and had a coughing fit. Jeremy looked like he'd shrunk a few inches.
"Now if you will excuse us ..." Maya walked briskly around the counter and none to gently ushered Jeremy out the door. And just before slamming it in his face, finished with. "We would like to fuck like rabbits!"
Maya locked the door and pulled down the shade. She turned in time to see Gabriel; beet red, mouth hanging opened in shock.
"Too over the top?" She asked, beaming proudly.
Could end here ...
or not?
